I have a chance to buy a .45 auto that has a Colt slide on a FedOrd frame. The slide reads Model of 1911 US Army on the right side with the Rampant Colt and Colts Manufacturing on the left. Am I correct in assuming this slide dates from the 1960s or earlier? It is blued. The price is reasonable and I can try before I buy. Yes I realize it's shooter grade. Best, Thomas.

If the slide is legitimately marked, the "Model of 1911" marking indicates that it was made in the period before or during WW I, and will probably have some patent dates on it as well. Pics would help.

The pre-WW2 slides are soft and don't hold up ro high volume shooting if you want the gun to stay tight.

Series 70, 80 or mil contract NM slide for a modern hardend slide for a highround count shooter. Those NM slidesae getting real hard to find.

It may be numbered behind the firing pin stop, pull it down and see, then it can be dated accurately.

This is a VERY cool site to ident 1911 parts: http://coolgunsite.com/pistols/1911infopage.htm

Ok I removed the firing pin stop only to find the tiny letter M at the top edge. Whoever fitted the aftermarket barrel did a horrible looking job but the slide looks fine and the gun does work and shoots well based on one mag of factory ball and one mag of 200 swc reloads. The colt is in the center of the left slide markings. The patent dates range from 1897 to 1913. Best, Thomas.

To update this a friend helped fit a good (make unknown) barrel and it shoots and runs great. In deference to the 100+ yr old slide I will use it sparingly. Thanks to all for replying. Best, Thomas.
