Hi all, was $350 too much for this revolver? A police friend called me on Thursday offering some guns for me to peddle at my work and it took two days to decide i wanted this gun. I am wondering if I did good as I have no moulds in this caliber, he did include some RCBS Carbide dies with the Revolver. I think i only bought so I could buy all the necessities to make it shootable

Excellent price in my humble opinion. I would not hesitate to buy one at that price. The .41 mag is an excellent caliber with plenty of good bullets and molds out there. I have an unusual 212 gr. HB wadcutter mold that really shoots well with trail boss. Good luck with your new purchase.

N frame smiths are never cheap. If I had the opportunity to buy a 57 at that price I would have broken my hand getting to my wallet.

It will do everthing a 44 will do except kick as hard.

Thank you all!! I now have the S&W in the safe and I believe it will leave when my children divide up my guns. This revolver was bought on my friends payment plan; Pay when I win at the casinos! Seriously I did not pass up on this purchase just because it came with dies. Unfortunately I gave away the 41 brass to a friend that is deep into the 41MAG. I will be borrowing his Saeco mould to cast some 2-3,000 bullets from a hardness which he has found works real good for the M-57. I would like to again thank all whom responded and await mold suggestions for my own use. I was cleaning it earlier and there is no wear that I can discern came from extensive shooting. Hackleback he does have a S&W 460 8.5 With a Burris 3x for $950. Gracias

The only .41 mould I own for my M-57 is the RCBS 41-210. It casts at 217 grains and .411" in my wheelweight alloy. Since I don't hunt with this revolver, it's sort of a long-range plinker. The accuracy is superb, perhaps the most-accurate revolver I've ever owned. I use 17.5 grains of 2400 as my standard load, which is comfortably below any sort of max load but still amply fast enough for my uses.

I don't mess with machine rests, but I can recognize good shooting when I see it. Quite a few of our members here have fired this revolver and load, and had extremely good results with it.

$350 is a VERY GOOD price, Armexman.

Just after buying my first 41 Magnum in 2003 (BHawk x 6.5"), I ran across a Lyman #410032 SWC mould for it. This is a plain-based design with Keith-pattern drive bands and rounded lube groove, with smaller meplat that specifies a #429 top punch. It shoots VERY well from 800-1100 FPS in the 'Hawk, my 657 x 6", and a friend's late-60's M-57 x 4".

Buckshot provided me a 245 grain Lee 6-cylinder short-profiled SWC a little later, and it has only seen work in the Blackhawk so far. It shoots quite well too.

Exceptional price, IMO.

If it's in very good or excellent condition, they generally run $200-300 more than that, more's the pity.

Thank you all again, I just finished loading up some SAECO 411,15 BHN, with 8 and 8.5 of Unique to try out tomorrow. I will be sending money to AZ for a RCBS 41-210K and hope to try out that bullet with variations of the above loads. I am glad to report that my hands are not broken from the revolver purchase but from the buying of:shellholders, mold, cases, sizing dies(lee and Lyman) and Hogue grips.

What is the Saeco 411? Is it a discontinued mold?

The first revolver I bought while I was in college in 1967 was a 6" S&W M57. Cost me $125 used. Was MANY years ago. Is a recessed jug, pinned barrel model. Still have it. I still hunt with it. It still kills deer very, very dead. Longest hit lasered at 124 yards.

I use an old 6 cavity original H&G 6 cavity mold (which I bought new for $37) to make 220 grain bullets from WW. Drive them with H110 or WW296.

Years later I bought a 3" M657 Round Butt that I carry legally concealed when hunting. I figure if a black bear decides to occupy my tree while I am bow hunting he's not gonna like the result.

You have a winner. You'll enjoy it and it will serve you well!

I too had a streak of luck like yours for the same price. I have been a fan of the .41 magnum since the late 60's. I have owned several over the years and the Model 57 has always been my favorite. The Hensley&Gibbs 220 grain mould is I believe the old Keith bullet for the .41. Right now I don't own a mould in .41 as I usually buy my cast bullets in this caliber from Black River. If I decide to cast my own I may get Mountain Moulds or someone else to cut me a 240 grain version of the H&G. Should be about right.

I bought and sold several M57s back when the retail was $337.50 and M29s couldn't be found for $1000 anywhere. It is my absolute favorite sidearm, and I carried a 4 inch P&R barreled one for over 10 years. It shot 1 hole groups with the RCBS 41-210-KT sized .410 and 10.0 grains of SR 4756. I have a brand new 410032 Lyman, the RCBS mould, A 410459 Lyman, and the 410610 gascheck Lyman moulds. Sadly, I no longer have any handguns. I make a few boolits for friends and give out loading advice when they ask. Fine gun, nice price, it will kill anything with 1 or 2 well placed shots, and I am GREEN with envy. Yeah, I know, cardinal sin. I just slapped my hand.

I picked up a 57-1 (8 3/8) for 365 and a DW Blued 6" full lug also in .41 mag. for 250 in Jan of '05

As a dyed in the wool .44 guy ...... the last thing I was thinking about was adding the .41 to my retitiore ..........

BUT a bargain is a BARGAIN!!

These two gems were 99% and like new ....... original box and wooden grips with the Smith ..... nothing with the "Dan" ........

VIVA fourty something round shooters!!!

I've been salivating over S&W's lately, for some reason; any N-frame for $350 sounds like a good deal, unless it's been lying in the bilge. If you want to feel really smug, google up the smith and wesson forum.
