Hey all,

I found one of my grandfathers old Ontario knives in the barn, and my father brought it back from the dead and put a great edge on it, taking away years of junk on the edge. I plan on using this knife for processing deer in the future. I am asking to see if anyone on the forum makes leather goods and if I shipped them the knife if they would be able to make a sheath for it. Nothing fancy, just an opened top sheath that goes maybe 1/4 the way up the handle and a belt loop for a 2" belt. Here are a few pictures.

Thanks,

I'm not a leatherworker, but in my opinion you're going to need a full sheath with a flap to make sure that knife stays in the sheath.

I'm thinking open top because I'll only have it while processing deer. Deboning the meat. Not planning on it being a field knife. With no flap it's one less thing to contend with while handling meat. That was my thought process anyhow

An open top sheath with about 2 inches of handle sticking out will hold it in the field just fine. This is the old mountan man style sheath. I have carried my hunting knife in one for over 40 years. I may even have an extra her I will check and see and will post a picture of one of mine later today.

Do you remember the Finnish fishing knife that was so popular here many years ago? I saw one in a yard sale a few weeks ago. They were shaped much like your knife and the sheath for them was exactly as you described for the one you want.

Here's an option you could consider and do it yourself. There's a ton of info on this out on the net...plenty of video tutorials too.

The old Finnish knives were Rapala brand. I still have a couple of them that you can shave the hair off your arm with.

Very similar to my 50+ year old L.L. Bean fish knife which came with a sheath very much like paraord's description.

I do my own holsters along with leather goods for traditional bow hunting. Ive made one sheath for my dad, turned out well. I'd do one for you, wouldn't take long at all now that I have a stitching horse.
This close to what you had in mind?

I'm guessing he is thinking of the pouch sheath. That is what I would use.

I haven't posted here in a long time, but I could help with your sheath. I have a small holster shop I run out of my house and would be happy to chat with you about this. I lurk on here but Beagle 333 sent me to this post.
You can email me @ effur9mm@gmail.com or PM me here.

Are you wanting fancy or rustic?

You can do a lot with an old pair of cowboy boots. Visit you thrift stores and church bargain sales. The tops make acceptable holsters and you can cover a softened pvc sheath with them.

Take a look at the Track of the Wolf site. They have sheaths as well as knife components.

This is a simple Sheath where the Knife is trapped by the belt.Easy access and a firm hold when working.

Thanks for the posts everyone. I got ahold of a friend of mine out of Michigan who makes ammo wallets after about a day and the knife is on the way to him. I forgot he did that until I was going through my reloading room and found something to remind me.

Sean357, I am thinking more along the lines of like a fillet knife sheath but with a belt loop. Ill put your name in the rolodex for future stuff
5shot, nothin fancy about cuttin up deer so plain jane dyed brown was what I was thinking
idahomike, im saving your contact info. I might have a few things to discuss in the not so distant future as well

Thanks all!

Did you try Springfield in the Vendor section under Whyte Leatherworks? He just did a few wallets and does belts, holsters etc. I don't know if he does knives or what he charges but shoot him a pm and ask.

Are you aware that for minimal outlay in materials and parts that you can buy and build Kydex sheath's and holsters quite easily?

Look up John Capps channel on Youtube he'll show you how it is done.
Like this one.

I had the harbor freight heat gun already, tin snips for cutting, trimming.

I have used the double cap rivets but they are tough to get the size exactly right. Too long or too short and you have troubles. I prefer the brass grommit's with a 1/4 inch hole. I punch the holes with a steel hole punch, excess is riveted over, so length is not as much of a problem.

I am no artist with this stuff but even 30-40$ investment would get you up to speed and make something that you are not ashamed to hang on your belt.
