Stopped in to a local tire shop fully expecting them to tell me they already had a "program" for their scrap wheel weights, but much to my joy they told me they've just been throwing them in the trash can. Nice surprise.

They've tentatively given me the okay to drop off a 5 gallon bucket to throw them in, but I can tell they're looking for an "incentive". No problem, and gladly.

I'm in AZ and I'm pretty sure we're a lead banned WW state. So my question is this: What's a safe amount to offer these guys for picking up a full bucket of WW? I have no idea what percentage is actually gonna be lead. What's the scrap value of Zinc? I kinda like the treasure hunt angle of the thing, but I don't want to come out on the losing end either.

Around here, the scrapyard will pay $0.22/lb for zinc ww. That quote was from last week, and metals prices have been falling since then.

Set the bar low until you know what you'll get. You will probably end up with a bucket of zinc, or mostly zinc. Doughnuts, beer or soda is probably the best bet.

Ask the tire shop what their WW are made from. That will give you some idea of how much zinc you're going to get.

I'm with rototerrier, start off low until you establish the amount of lead vs other. I would probably bring a box of doughnuts when you take them the bucket the first time. Make sure that your name and phone number are on the bucket. Pizza is good "bait" too. Be careful with the beer until you establish whether the guys in the shop drink or what their company policy is concerning alcohol. Good Luck with your new source.
