I manage a gun range/store, and had a fellow come in yesterday with
a pair of rifles. One is a Henry reproduction, Navy arms. It is in good
to very good shape, caliber is 44-40. The other is a 73 Winchester, also
by Navy arms. It is also 44-40, but has the 30" barrel. It is in better
shape, but did have a little surface rust on the cch frame.

I was thinking about buying one of these for my own use. He didn't
ask for a specific price..."make me an offer". The bores on both guns
look pretty good. What say ye, oh soothsayers of leverguns?:-D

I don't want to steal them, but also don't want to overpay. Wholesale
for either gun would be $8-900, depending on the vendor. I want
a gun to try some cowboy shooting, but also to maybe hunt whitetails.
I am not a fan of powder-puff loads.

Any advice or insight is greatly appreciated!

I recently bought an original Winchester 73. I did some research before buying and as part of that I talked to a dealer who specializes in antique guns. He said a used repro 73 is worth half what it cost new. He didn't give me a number but, given the context, I gathered that he meant about $500. The 30" barrel might increase the value but it might also make it harder to sell?

If you want more power than standard .44-40 , get a Marlin or Win 94 in .44 Mag .

If you want more power , get a Marlin .45-70 .

God bless

I am no expert but you can get a '92 by Puma in 44,45,454,480 ect from wholesalers for $400/$500 and even a 44-40 so I would have to say that it would be no more than I could get a new one.

That sounds on track with what I am thinking. I offered $400...we'll see!

Thanks for all the replies. If this falls through, I am probably going to
buy a 92 from EMF. I shoot 45 LC in my conversion cylindered 58 remington,
and may go that route.

My brother had a 24" octagon barreled 45 that was a real nice gun. We used to hotrod it pretty good, but it also shot lighter loads pretty well.

the 73 repros are still the toggle link system
so powder-puff loads is still what you are gonna be shooting.
in the rossi 92's you can get the 44-40 up near 44 mag levels.
notice i said near....... the 44-40 brass is fairly thin.
but 12-15 gr 2400 under a 200 gr boolit ain't a cat sneeze load.

A gun dealer that seemed to know offered me $750 for this 1866 Uberti repro in 44/40, but it belonged to my Dad and isn't for sale
