Hey guys. I might be able to pick one of these up once a couple items sell off.
Any reviews on them?

I have several Cowboy Marlins, and love them all. What caliber is this one?

Sorry I should have specified 1895 in 45/70.
I would really like the limited III best but they're all hard to come by

I'm gonna be happy with just a Cowboy, Marlin 1895 that is.

Love mine. I put an old steel Lyman Model 66 sight on it and it's a pretty fair shooter. It's fairly light so recoil is a bit stiff, but the old infantry loads of a 405 boolit at 1,300 fps are a lot of fun, even at several hundred yards. I guess it's about a 2 MOA shooter day in and day out.

Here's mine:

Hey there MJS -- The Marlin 1895 Cowboy and Limited series rifles are very nifty. However a little clarification may be in order. The 1895 Cowboy came with a 26" barrel, and was just that - an 1895 Cowboy. Looks like this... (click the pictures to embiggenate)

183485

And the roll stamp looks like this...

183486

The Limited's were a series of five rifles, I, II, III, IV, and V. All of these had 24" barrels with the exception of the "III" which had an 18" tube. The Limited II looks like this...

183487

The roll stamp looks like this...

183488

I'm sure either one will make you happy!! A ten grains of Unique load under a 300 grain Laser-Cast bullet will put a big smile on your face all day long.

Hope this helps. Best regards. Wind

Scharf: I put a Graycoil Mercury Recoil Reducer in the stock of mine and it added 1lb. to the gun (now 8lbs and still light) and cut the recoil down about 30-40%. I also have a 1" thick Pachmayer Recoil Pad on it.

The standard load I have settled on is 33 gr of 5744 with an RCBS .45-300 FNGC @340 gr. These are running about 1550-1600 fps and I can shoot 40 of them in a Silhouette Match with only a Tee Shirt for padding. Without these additions I'm back at 25 gr of 5744 and a trajectory like a rainbow.

I plan on Powder Coating the next batch of boolits for that gun and expect to see an increase in Velocity from that.

I have the LTD IV with the half mag and large loop (that's aftermarket I think) and love it!

W.R.,

I've often wondered about those mercury recoil reducers. I've never bought one though thinking that it might throw the balance of the rifle off. Sounds like it and the recoil pad are working for you though.

Joatmon,

I sure wish my Limited II had the half magazine. It would be just perfect then.

Scharf: it moved the balance point back about 2" when the gun is empty. With a full mag the gun is pretty muzzle heavy.

Randy,

I never thought about the weight or balance point changing due to the rounds in the magazine. Interesting.

I wish that my tube fed rifles had a magazine block like my Browning Auto 5 shotgun. That muzzle heaviness would be great for offhand shooting.

Hey there Scharf -- That's one of the beautiful thangs about the 26" barreled Cowboy. You can pour three or four 45-70 cases full of lead and make removable barrel weights for your off hand shooting. Three will stay there and you can load four live rounds behind them for a string of silhouette. If three is too heavy then go with one or two. Hope this helps. Best regards. Wind

Thanks Wind. A good tip that.

I often spend the whole day just shooting off hand out to a couple of hundred yards or more with my rifles and even my revolvers.

Scharf: I hit a 200M Ram with my S&W696 a couple of months ago! I was close on the other 4 shots in that cylinder. I shot my 5" SBH Bisley that day and didn't hit much of anything, but I had fun doing it.

I have to say that's my favorite type of shooting.
Chunk of steel at a distance with a lever and or wheel gun.
Not to say a Sharps isn't fun too.

Absolutely. Love to hear the clang of a successful hit down range.

Osteodoc: you can load your .45-70 rounds on that BPM tool you just bought and derive even more satisfaction.

A old friend of mine has a JM Marlin cowboy and I watched him clover leaf three shots out of five with his own black powder loads. Total five shot group was two inches at 100yds with a tang sight. If I remember correctly, he used his 500gr Sharps load and he loaded them one at a time.

Know in cowboy shooting receiver mounted peep sights are verboten. Just the barrel mounted "V" sights on tang sights. Course we're not trying to bring home meat for the family table either.

I spend about equal amounts of time shooting it and tightening screws.

I want a Marlin Cowboy in any caliber. My favorite configuration followed closely by the 336 Texan. They're not exactly growing on trees around here, though.

This rifle is still there. Does anyone know what the price is on these currently? I didn't find any exact matches on gun broker.
Thanks guys!

Hard to guess exactly, but I would think it would be in the 700-900 dollar range. I have not seen a Limited II for sale in a while. Only CB's of any sort that I have seen lately have been the deluxe shiny models with the 1200 dollar price tag, but the last couple 45-70 1895 CB's that I have seen for sale were offered for 750.
