Found a decent deal on a 1874 rolling block mod 1867 8x58r. Comes with a set of dies but no rounds. I have been loading for a while but only basic stuff 38/357 45colt 45acp 9mm 30-06. Cast some of my own stuff but mostly for blackpowder muzzle loader shooting. Anyway I've never messed with obsolete ammo and reforming other brass in another. Been told 45-70 works for 8x58 but takes 3 steps to get it to size. I just started loading 45-70 so have some brass but not all the different dies to get me what needed.
So just wonder if anyone has stopped shooting this round and might have 50 rounds brass I might purchase. I know I can buy some buffalo bore ammo and might chose to go that way but the $60+ a box just to get started and not knowing any of the other particulars of the round...well.
Decided too pick brains here first but just thought it was cool weapon to have and shot to go along with my trapdoor. Want a 45-70 sharps or rolling block but both are out of my reach until I sell my fowler or something. Thanks guys...

I have a Krag in that caliber. I just bit the bullet, and bought 50 cases. Tell your wifey, hint-hint, Christmas is coming.

How are things in the State of Jefferson? It's a shame the Japs didn't wait about a month longer before bombing Pearl, isn't it?

Buffalo Arms has the brass, just bite the bullet and get it there. By the time you get the stuff to stretch the 45-70 brass you could have gotten what you need. I had one and it shot very well with cast boolits. It is now a 40-65.

I am not endorsing these guys, I have never bought fro them, but they have it on hand about $45.
You might try Graf &sons as well
Having made lots of brass of odd ball old stuff, I suggest you buy a box or 2 of brass and get started. You might still have some minor issues with correct bullet size -expander plug- what you can find (afford) that works. IDR if that one is one of those big 8mm or not have fun

I use 8x56r brass to make 8x58r Danish. The neck is a bit short, but it's easy to do, and works fine. My batch has three reloads on them now, no splits or issues.

Dont bite no bullets!!!
Since its a single loader case neck is of little use to you.
Use 7.62x54R cases they work fine.
Btv it's a Swede, they converted boatloads of 1867 to 1889.
They did a fine job in that they rehardned the action, put in new block and hammer + hardend pins.

I load the 8mm MAX. in my Swede and it shoots like a laser out past 200yds.

10 shots at 55yds with irons and my old sad eyes:
Norma N202 32 grains for @1850fps from a 33" barrel

Something like 32 grains Acc 2015 or Alliant Reloader 12 or Benchmark or IMR 8208 will put you in the 1800fps range wich i found most accurate.

I cast 97% lead + 3% tin + 3% antimony for a BHN @12 and i dont size the bullets just seat the check.

Please bear i mind that the Danish and Swedish found out the hard way that the action of a RB is nowhere as strong as a K-J and loaded accordingly. No more than 26kpsi.

The Dutchman has more info on the RB's than you'll ever want to know:

There have been questions regarding cases.

In a single loader you dont need the full neck length.
From that several options occur:
7.62x54R is as simple as lubing the inside of the neck good and expand the neck followed by FL sizing.
8x56R is a viable candidate so is 45-70 and 45-90.
Perfectly good 8x58RD can be made from magnum cases but they involve some lathe work.

Lets thake an example.

Step 1: Lube the neck and run as far as possible up the FL die.

See the striations that indicate the result

Step 3: follow the contour of the case and remove the belt

Step 4: Now FL size the case for final form (and trim neck)
http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm153/Chickenthief/Skydning/M789%20Rolling%20Block/R0012255_zps6ipuaols.jpg (http://s295.photobucket.com/user/Chickenthief/media/Skydning/M789%20Rolling%20Block/R0012255_zps6ipuaols.jpg.html)

It is not much of a rim but the RB extractors have no issues ejecting the cases.
