I need one. I'm guessing this will have to be fabricated. Seems it's a two part arrangement, there's the spring and a stirrup.

Anyone know of a source or someone who could make one?

Might check with CPA.

In my quick searching last night, it seems I found the CPA ones are not exact copies. I will pursue it further. I do happen to have another 44 1/2, maybe a skilld gunsmith could reverse engineer the one from that rifle, but I bet that will be expensive.

Well, I have an email in to them, I'll follow up with a phone call tomorrow. Seems they maintain some parts for the originals. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Might check with the American Single Shot Rifle Association they might know of somebody that can make replacements?

I called CPA this morning and talked to a very nice lady who told me their springs were exact matches and even explained in pretty great detail how to actually install it over the phone. Anyway, a new spring is on it's way along with the stirrup and the screw it may need (I haven't looked). Very pleased with CPA as a business so far, wish there were more like them out there.

I'll update this when it arrives, but for now, it looks like getting this rifle going again will be a lot less painful than I thought.

...and talked to a very nice lady who told me their springs were exact matches Rich, that lady is Gail Shuttleworth, Paul Shuttleworth's daughter. She is as knowledgeable about 44 1/2's as her dad

Thanks for posting that. My dad collected 44 1/2s and other single shots from the day, but mainly the 44 1/2. Most of them are sold off now, but I got two while we're downsizing my folks, one of which was a "project" in that it needed this and he hadn't gotten to it, hence the reason it wasn't sold. As I get older, I'm beginning to inherit Dad's affinity for single shots.

CPA is good to go in my book. I doubt I'll ever have the cash to drop on one of their rifles, but anybody who still answers a phone and has the time to politely talk you through something like this is becoming an endangered species in this day and age.

Rich, sounds like you're getting primed to be a regular at the Tappan Hill matches. :)

Not really. I'm in the process of downsizing my folks to move them into assisted living. Among other things, my dad was an avid collector of 44 1/2s and had a lot of them which he has been selling off now for several years. I took two off his hands, this one was a project because it needed this and the stock was broken so it survived being sold. I'm not even 100% sure what caliber it's in, the barrel says .25 rimfire, but Dad seems to think it's been rechambered and converted to standard .25-20 Winchester. I'll figure that out. I have dies and some brass for .25-20, I'll need a mold eventually, but have a bunch of bullets already cast up I got somewhere.

Stevens 44's and 44 1/2's along with Cpa's version are really addictive. I'm also addicted, so I understand.

Welcome to the club.

I also have a collection of 44's and 44 1/2's. Yes they can be addictive. Haven't bought any recently. Can't seem to find one that I don't already have for a price that i can afford. A Stevents Pope is on my bucket list but so far not in my budget.

Are there only two people building these rifles?
