A buddy of my coined the term "Frankengun" when I mix and match parts to build a project. Typically its simple stuff like re-threading take off barrels for another action. In this case I was looking at a pile of parts and decided I could make something work.

A while ago, a friend gave me a Springfield 87D with a rather short barrel, lets just say it was too short for any practice purpose, so I removed it and was left with an action and long barrel stub, but not very long :). I also had a barrel and tube magazine (like new) from an Erma lever action that was sold under the Iver Johnson name. Anyhow I figured I could stick them together and build a rifle for my niece who likes to shoot. Of course it would have to be pink. Since the Erma tenon was too small for the action and the Springfield had several featured I didn't want to duplicate (ramp and extractor notches). I machined the Erma barrel to fit into a cut down portion of the Springfield tenon, I made this stepped to maximize surface area and preserve the ramp. It was a press fit glued together with Loctite 680 (http://www.loctite.tw/twc/content_data/327273_UPGRADE680EN.pdf) (I believe the sheer is ~3K psi). This is the same stuff I used for barrel liners and given that there is basically no forward pressure with the straight case of a 22 and the amount of surface area I have I do not expect any issues. The trigger came from a Jap 38 that I recently sporterized (It was already butchered when I go it). The scope base is a modified Weaver 94 (Contender). To get the stock pink I used Tru-oil with a little pink enamel mixed in. This gave a finish with some depth, unlike what I'd expect from simple paint. The stock was purchased on eBay. What do you think?

Nicely Done and a good job - make do or do without, is an old philosophy I am familiar with.

Very nice job. Interesting that the enamel and the Tru-Oil are compatible like that.

I also monitor my parts accumulation and when it gets to critical mass, I "marry" them all together into a firearm. Easiest way to keep the parts from getting lost.

Nicely done. A "custom" rifle that will have others scratching their heads.

The Tru-Oil and enamel mix was an experiment. Initially I wanted to keep it translucent with a pink tone so one could see the wood grain. I basically wound up making thick pink paint (not by design), but it worked out. :)

Erma made some pretty accurate .22 barrels, at least the Ithaca lever action I had was. That rifle should be quite a bit lighter and probably balances better than when it was new.

The pink color on the wood stock looks better than most of the pink stocks I have seen. I would suggest saving what you have left of the finish in a small bottle that is filled to the top, either for touch ups or the inevitable "Uncle map, can you make this one look like my .22?"

IIRC Truoil is basically BLO and varnish, so it makes sense to me that it mixed okay with enamel paint, I saw an awful lot of varnish mixed into enamel paint when I was in the Navy.

Nice job! I'll bet that legend on the side of the barrel will cause some "double takes" at the range. "Where's the lever?"

I love to hear stories about stuff like this. Breathe new life into old stuff. Way to go. I think it looks great. Pink isn't my favorite but she must love it.

Very nice build! I love project guns, but they are getting a little harder to find.

Any Cal.

Still need to tweak the cartridge lifter a little, but she is happy with her new rifle.

I've worked on a couple of 87s and got them feeding again with lots of bad words. They're certainly cool when they work what with the screen door & all.

185707If the sear wears down, they go full auto. Gunparts corp has the parts to get them back to semi.
