Which would you choose?
38-56 Improved or

416 barnes but probably .410 dia

these are the two beginning points, of course adjusted to a length for the action.

For deer and similar game, the .38-56. For larger and or tougher game, the .416 Barnes.

i don't mean a 38-55 or 375 win, a 38-56 imp has a case volume close to a 375 whelen.

Assuming you want to use a modern Marlin lever gun then you should start with a marlin 1895. The rim diameter of both your choices will not load into a 336 without extensive modification. The 1895 45-70 bolt should work with either cartridge. You may or may not have to modify the carrier.

Who would have make your barrel? Interesting project, please post your progress.

Both cartridges are formed from 45-70, so a 1895 is the rifle to build on. Should function without mods to action. I am leaning towards the 38 side but need to do more ciphering on bullet length and seating depth, my concern is it will have too long of a bullet length. Thus my liking the "410" Barnes. I want to build a big bore with reach. Sort of a heavy 358 win or a short 405. "Big Medicine" in a short action.

A barrel blank is all I plan on buying. I like the ones I get from Green Mountain, especially the price. The rest I will make from scratch. Reamers, dies, and all. Probably let Tom and Al make some molds!

The making of it all is the point. And my opinion that marlin has missed the best use for this rifle. 250-300grs at 2400fps would shoot flat enough for hunting to 250yards and be fine medicine for all things with sharp teeth and claws.

Another project is a 416X2 on my 1895M. This is what I think they should of done with that action.

Or at least they could have used a standard mag case for the 450. The old barrel might go to JES to be bored to .475 to make a 475X2. Better with heavy like 500gr. As I age I have less use for that weight. But it would be neat. Swap the barrel new toy.

As some would note, the expense of doing this type of project is silly. I agree totally. I have a 375 Ruger and it will do all of this and more. I am not worried about spending money on tools so I can MAKE my own stuff that will have little to no resale value. The cost of labor is not a cost but my pleasure. I have had 356s and other stuff that the collectors have made overpriced, I liked them for the uniqueness of having something different or better. So I guess I'm going off the deep end.

I'm happy to be a hobby machinist/gunsmith. Key word HOBBY. Profit is not a factor.

Sometimes when I was Appraising Real Estate I would go to a house that was "Over Improved" The people would ask me how much more their house was worth than the one next door that wasn't all that. They usually didn't like it when I told them that their gold plated bathroom hardware in their 1960's tract house didn't increase the value at all.

Then I would tell them about "Value in Use." Which is how you extract the value of some upgrade that nobody else wants. IE: "You" use the thing.

Sometimes you do things because you want them, not because others will like it. Maybe they will but who knows, and that fact a lot of times really doesn't matter to you. You are getting what you want, or at least what you thought you wanted.

I am and have been Building a Jeep Scrambler From Scratch for the last 9 years and I am finally getting close to it actually being drivable. I wanted it built exactly the way I wanted it built, and you can't buy one anywhere even remotely like it. The only Jeep part on this car is the grill, I pretty much built the rest.

Someday when I get ready to sell it I might even get a decent return for my craftsmanship, but I'll never get what it is worth to me or what I spent on it, back out of it,,, so I must drive it a lot to extract that value.

Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. Another phrase that fits is,,, "There's no Accounting for Taste."

I also extracted a lot of satisfaction from the building of this car, and you always have to pay for entertainment somehow.

I like unique things as some of us do.

The intrinsic value we receive from our projects is difficult to assign a monetary value to. I have several projects that I cannot retrieve the $ that I have invested, but I would not trade these unique items for anything.

Not to hijack the thread, but I love the Cummins in yer jeep there Mr Buchanan! And yes, there are things, such as your Jeep project and bearcove's rifle that, on the surface, some may ask "huh?". They don't have to make sense to anyone except the one that's investing the effort. Kudos to both of ya.
BTW, I'd choose the .416 Barnes if for no other reason than I have an old article Fred Barnes penned about two different .416s. One for an 1895 Marlin and another for a bolt action. I disremember if it was a Mauser or a 1917 Enfield tho.

I wanted a short handy big bore to emulate a 405 Win but in a bolt rifle and necked up a 300 WSM to 416. 400 gr & 315 gr shown

.405 Grenadier..
Suppose the 7.62X54R case could be necked up to a .375, .358, or .338..

Well,,, yes it is. Along with a TH400, US Gear OD, Atlas 4.0 transfer case, HP D60 4.10 rear with ARB Locker and HP D44 Front with Air Locker. 37" Goodyear MTR"s on steel wheels. All Fiberglass body, top, and doors. I built the frame and entire running gear. Only Jeep part is the grill!

Sorry to Hijack but this is the same kind of project as the "Marlin Project." It's what takes your "Marlin Project" into the woods so you can use it.
