Greetings;

Thought I'd share my results from slugging a 'new' M1917 replacement barrel from Criterion Arms, Wisc. These are 'new old' stock, in that they were contracted to replicate original military issue. I plan to cast my own GC'd boolits. Now to find a mold. My previous blog responses seemed to suggest a bore riding design, 170+gr.

I deconstructed a 1977 Greek Surplus cartridge for the 150.4gr FMJ sample & used a fired case for the slug. The chamber neck seems to be .342"-.343". I feel this is accurate as I had thoroughly heated/annealed the case while filling w/lead. I'm interpreting the .046" dimension as "freebore", and the .100" from end of "freebore" to start of rifling as my "leade". The land grooves measured about .301"-.302". All measurements taken with name brand dial caliper.

--I formed an 1.25" long soft lead slug [from homebrew 12ga slugs] by drilling a 5/16' hole in Oak & lining it with a piece of aluminum foil; the slug falls out; then rolling it on top of table saw to shape it a bit & form a 'boattail' to enter the case neck.

--heated & filled a used case with soft lead, half way up the neck

--chambered case, dropped the slug & inserted a 9/32" x 36" drill rod, sheathed with spiral electrical tape; a perfect fit

--8 firm smacks w/18oz. hammer, unlocked bolt, persuaded case exodus with additional gentile smacks w/oak stick.

Good work. Thanks for pics and numbers. My son recently inherited one of these from his mother's side of the family. It was heavily altered before he was born (custom stock from about 1965, shortened barrel, no military sights, etc.). We're just getting started with it, but it already shows promise. Fascinating history behind these rifles.
