thought i would put info on the correct bullet lengths for accurate shooting in a 50 cal fast twist. .50 cal 1/48 twist. 7.5 to .8 long. dont try this bullet past 250 or 300 yards but to that distance should be very accurate. .50 cal 1/32 twist. 1 inch long and that length is good to 500 yards or more. .50 cal 1/28 twist 1.1 long and that bullet is good for 500 yards or more also. remember it isnt the weight of bullet to the twist of the rifle for accuracy, it is the length. a short round nose will weigh more as a pointed nose will weigh less. my three bullets above weigh 362 grains,487 grains, 540 grains. again, go by bullet length, not weight. hope this helps some one shoot more accurately.

Great! my new NOE mold should be spot on for 28 twist. 469grn with hollow base, 500 with flat. :-D

181772 Dunno why they always leave the crimp groove in a Muzzle loader GG design :-? I'm already set up for this season, so I'm not even testing till after this year

Thanks. I have to find some bullets to try out in my new to me Great Plains Hunter.

I also need to get some sizing dies for paper patching as that's the way I will shoot mine a lot of the time.

Have you looked at how well shorter bullets work? I'd like to have some that are not 'bruisers' for shorter range plinking. I will be trying patch and ball but might like to try a lighter bullet paper patched as well.

i recently tried the one for the 1/48 twist in the other two guns, they were all over the place. also i tried the one for the 1/32 twist in a target 1/23 twist and they also were all over the place. the bullets like the right twist and nothing else. if any one wants me to do the math for other cal. i will, just pm, me. math never ever lies. God invented math, and God never ever lies.

So what would be the ideal lengths for sabot bullets? Mine are either .452 or .429 1/32 twist.

I answered my own question. Seems there is quite a discussion about twist rates and bullet weights in the .44mag rifle forums. Something like 1/38 stabilizes the 240gn well enough, but, not the 300gn. Muzzle velocities in the 1500-1600fps range.

Then I looked at the S&W .500 It was designed for a twist of 1/18.75 and velocity of 1625fps and bullets of 450gn.
