broke in the 35 whelen

Finally got a deer in front of my handi rifle 35 whelen. Been trying for two years. Got the front of the lungs and destroyed the heart. It ran about 15-20 yards. I saw it go down and this was in our thick blackjack scrub brush here in Oklahoma so it was close when it fell. It was walking down a fence row, screened by the thick brush. I had to find an opening to shoot through. Found about a 1 foot hole thru the brush and held on that until the deer stepped into the opening. When I saw it, I couldn't see any antlers so I assumed it was a doe. By the time I got to it, it had grown a 6" spike on one side and a little fork on the other. No matter, it was my last day to hunt and I was in "bird in the hand" mode. I was using a NOE mold that throws a 245 gr flat point boolet with enough H4895 to get 1900 fps. I was surprised at the bloodshot area on the offside. It was bigger than my hand. It was pretty close when I shot it so that may have something to do with it. This is deer #4 with a cast boolet. 2 with 45-70, 1 with 30-30, and now 1 with 35 whelen.

Well done......yes pics would be great. It's the last day of the season here and I won't be getting out today. Can't complain though, had a great week of hunting with old friends. Enjoy the bounty

Leftieye: The Handi is not bad with the cast boolits at 1900 fps. Jacketed boolits at factory velocities is a whole other story. I made the mistake of loading some 225 gr "J" boolits at factory velocities. That'll loosen your fillings! I too heard the stories about the horrendous recoil. With factory ammo, I think that the stories are true but if you're on this sight, you probably don't use too much of that "store-bought" ammo.

I have a Handi rifle in .35 Whelen I haven't done much with. I need to get working with it again. I like .35 calibers.
