I think I screwed up and should have posted this in "Gunsmithing Tricks and Tips." Sorry about that.

Question: do those 6-32 set screws screw into the sides of the Htown scope mount or do they just screw into the military mount and against the Htown scope mount?

Whatever the case, looks like your mount is solid as a rock. Mine hasn't wiggled since I installed it. Mine is a fine rifle!!! For $70!!!!! The scope cost me 4x what the rifle cost me!

Hey Junior,

The mount is drilled and tapped for the 6-32 screws, when I set it up for drilling, I drilled #35 (tap drill) all the way through the sight side plates and the mount in one operation. Removed the mount, drilled 5/32" to open up holes for screw clearance in sight sideplates, then tapped the mount all the way through from one side.

It does make for a very secure mount now. The scope was an old cheap 2X EER BSA I had laying around, aside from not the best optics, it performs quite well out here in the open desert of AZ, in thick woods would be another matter.

I picked up the rifle by happenstance, one day neighbor out of the blue, said he had an old rifle that he would sell me for $25.00, took a look and didn't hesitate to buy it. It is very tame and accurate with cast bullets, with military ammo, a loudenboomer, mule kicking flame thrower.

This is a scout I made up several years ago from a $90.00 buy. Is a FN 98 Mauser that had been rebarreled to 7.62 NATO by the Israelis back in the 1960s, the bore was/is like new, as it has been cast bullet fed. I cut the barrel down to 18.5," fitted wood from forearm to make up raised cheek piece and installed a Timney trigger. Retrofitted a B-Square mount for a more secure unit, in case the scope should fail, made up a ghost ring rear aperture sight, can't see in pic, but installed a post sight at front of scope mount. I shortened butt by 1," cut the cup butt plate off flush and refitted, also drilled out two holes in butt stock to lessen weight and epoxied in 1/2" PVC pipe to retain integrity. I like the scout concept, makes for fast handling little rifles. The .45 is a 1943 vintage Remington Rand 1911A1, have had it for decades and is my favorite handgun.

Junior, here is a bit more detail on the Mauser scout conversion, rather than clogging up forum with pics, will post links.

This is poor boy ghost ring aperture sight. The square stock is 3/8", the round (with flats) is 1/4". I drilled and pinned the upper 1/4" stock and hard silver soldered, milled flats, then graduated. With the locking set screws, the flats prevent the adjustable components from rotating, the ghost ring is drilled and tapped for different sized apertures if so desired.

Receiver was drilled and tapped 8-32, bottom 3/8" square stock attached, then fitted to wood. Camera angle makes things appear misaligned, but they aren't.

Retrofitted B-Square mount, the OEM drilled and tapped hole in middle of mount was where it was originally attached at rear sight ears. For retro, I slotted the mount for tight fit, then drilled and tapped through for 8-32, the raised portion of rear sight base was also drilled and tapped 8-32, and rear of mount is locked down there. Sight I installed can be seen at front of mount, it clears top of mount enough to give a good sight picture with ghost ring.

This pic is of cut off and installed reconfigured cup butt plate.

This is cheek piece made up from part of original forearm, in addition to being epoxied in place, it has two internal 1/4" steel pins.

I milled out bolt knob, every little bit of weight reduction helps.

That's the kind f rifle I want to see show up at one of these high dollar matches where everyone is shooting a $2500.00+++ AR and clean the slate with it!

I posted some of this on another site, generated bit of interest in cheap scout rifles, so updated the page somewhat from original post.

Somebody in the past had installed a Lyman slip on ramp with bead, hooded cover is from the Mauser to take glare off bead.

I shot my M38 Mosin-Nagant this hot afternoon using two different jacketed bullets/loads. The scope is a scout scope 2 1/2x28 EER Leupold with parallax set at 100 yards. I shot at 150 yards. When I installed the scope I got it on target at 50 yards. This is the rifle I have to swage down bullets for due to its oversized bore. Supposed to be .311" and is .3155".

185 gr load @ 2200 fps = 3 in 6"
196 gr load @ 2100 fps = 3 in 3 7/8"

That ain't bad for a 2 1/2x scout scope at 150 yards. From a $70 rifle.......

I adjusted the 196 gr load 1 1/2" low at 150 yards which is about 1 1/2" high at 100 yards. I like my Mosin-Nagants more every time I shoot one. I'm hunting excuses to buy another one while they are still available.
