Need help with research for a long list of Buffalo cartridges...

Howdy yall! I am doing a research of the guns used for Buffalo and their cartridges. The guns seem to be fairly easy finding info for but the cartridges tend to be harder. I am primarily looking for a little history, load data, bullet options, brass conversion options, differences in the bottleneck vs. straight wall cartridges if cartridges share a cartridge & powder load, possibly modern smokeless loads for modern reference, and a little more understanding. Also, if there is a place to also gain more info as well, I am all ears! Here is the list of absurdity.

.40-50 Sharps Bottleneck (SBN)
.40-50 Sharps Straight (SS)
.40-65 Winchester
.40-70 SBN
.40-70 SS
.40-82 Shiloh (Is this a new cartridge or just as old as the rest?)
.40-90 SBN
.40-90 SS

.44-70 Remington
.44-90 Remington
.44-100 Remington
.44-77 SBN
.44-90 SBN

This a small section of cartridges I am studying so I will have more questions with a different list but it is better if I take this research in chunks. None the less, I appreciate everyone's input for this! Thank you so much in advance!

Don't know if those cartridges are covered in the Cartridges of the World book, but the old one I have from the early 80's gives data on those. Another source is to find a reprint of the first Ideal loading handbook. I believe you can get that from Cornel publishing (Abby books)

From what I've read, the list isn't that long. The professional hunters used the .50-70 and .44-77 to start, then .45-70, .40-90 bottleneck, and .50-90. The other cartridges were for target shooting and hunting of smaller game.

You might get a copy of Garbe and Venturino's SPG BPC Reloading Primer, which would give you some history and description of most of your cartridges, and the black powder loads for them.

Getting a stand, is a book of acounts of buffalo hunters. Mike Venturino has a book shooting buffalo rifles that is good also.

The .40-80 bottleneck, not on your list probably because it was mostly a target cartridge long held the record for the tightest group at 1,000 yards. IIRC the record wasn't broken till the .25-06 was first used in competition.

Never heard of the 40-80 bn. What company made it, and who was the shooter that held that record?

The 40-90 bn was a pretty popular cartridge with the ODG's. There are several of the buffalo runners that used it.
