Ok, I used to have a NEF 12 Gauge single, and just purchased an H&R Handi in in 300 BLK.

I intended to purchase a couple additional barrels and have them fitted, but then the program was shut down and I am out in the wind.

I have a HUGE A$$ load of 7.62X54R so that is the caliber I want go with for my first attempt.
I have found a barrel blank supplier and for less than $42 (less shipping) I can get a 20" x 1" 7.62x39mm Gunsmith Edition Raw Blank in 4140 and can get the chamber reamed out to fit 7.62X54R.
The 24" is $59.95 and the 27" is $99.95.
They have just about any bore for just over $100!

The issue is attaching the barrel mount to the barrel and fitting it.
I could do my best to duplicate the mounting of the 300 BLK barrel but have not ever done or seen the fitting of a break action gun.

Also, I would not want to hire a gun smith as I'm sure the cost of the project would cost more than a complete rifle would cost.

Any one have any ideas, suggestions or advise?

There is a gunsmith of good repute that haunts these pages by the name of Taylor. I'd contact him and be guided by his advise.

I intended to purchase a couple additional barrels and have them fittedHow your barrel program doesn't include a large caliber on the SB1 steel shotgun. All H&R rifle caliber rifles are SB2 steel. There is a difference in steel strength grade of the actions

I used to own the shot gun.
I now have the rifle in 300 BLK and it was able to take other rifle barrels as long as they were fitted.

I have machined lugs/barrel blanks and welded the two together.

Go to the H&R forums on the graybeard website and read up on SB1 and SB2 receivers. The first is malleable cast iron and the second is heat treated cast steel. The SB1 receivers are only safe with shotgun and pistol calibers as a basic rule. GW

Once made a shop light into a three foot skeeter eater but laud no, for me m-o-o-n, that spells gunsmith.
But about barrel stubs, I'm still dreaming on a Handi .41 mag.

The easiest way is to do a barrel stub. I have done H&R and Rossi that way.

Some will ask why 54r when you can use 308? If you have a pile of brass why not? May want to go with a 308 barrel vs the Russian, just due to the much larger selection in 308. Theres not much to choose from in 311. I know the Lee dies are set up to load 308, you have to buy a different expander to run 311. 54r holds a spot in between 308 and 30-06 when it comes to velocity. Only issue is 54r tends to like long barrels. You lose alot of velocity going with anything under 20in.

None of which matters as I have a few cases of ammo, so thousands of rounds and only one not too accurate Mosin Nagant.
It was on sale and I was making more than I am now.
I wanted a few extra barrels in other calibers but figure, since I have to start somewhere, why not there.

I usually buy a blank from green mountain. I have a lathe so dont have to pay anybody for the work. I needed a faster twist than H&R uses to stabilize a 45-70 500gr at subsonic. Not hard to do. I did a Rossi in 45 colt, and another Rossi in 30-30 w a fast twist.

Green mountain does offer 311 barrels, just not much selection. I have an extra Mosin sitting around that needs a barrel. I will do it w a 308 barrel for better bullet selection, still have a nice mosin to shoot my other ammo thru.

Tackleberry?
Are you the same Tackleberry that is in the, um, let's call it the 55/355 intersection area?
I met a guy named Tracy at a clients warehouse and have heard stories of a local Tackleberry.

I ordered a 20" .311 barrel from Green Mountain on Saturday and next time I'm near McMaster Carr, I'll pick up a 5/8" square bar to make the lug (assuming I can borrow some milling machine time from a business acquaintance).
I assume the stub will take the scope mount and lug welding stresses so after the welding is done and it had been stress relieved, I can turn the inner diameter a few thousandths smaller that the stub OD, heat the stub, cool the barrel, press it together and have the chamber reamed after it's all fitted up.
I got the Green Mountain barrel ($52.90 shipping included) Manson Reamers has a 7.62x54R reamer for only $110, and the lug stock should be $12 for 3 feet of bar stock, so not too bad except that I'm stuck with a reamer after all is done.

Archangel, a stub job uses a cut off piece of an existing barrel, usually from a shotgun, so you don't have to make a lug. You bore the stub and turn the new barrel to fit the bore. Most thread the barrel and stub, there are other ways. GW

No idea where 55/355 area is. I gained the nickname after I got out of the marines. I was really the only one in the circle of friends who had been in the military, I had guns, just like the guy in the police academy movie.

I know, but I don't have a spare barrel assembly and am still going to make one, the idea of not welding on the barrel sound like a better idea so a piece of tube in place of the barrel sounds like the best way to go.

55/355 is near Lamont Illinois south west of Chicago.

There is a thread in gunsmithing from a member who had some lugs made and weld them to barrels.

Closest I came to Chicago was a lay over in the airport.
