Well it took me a while to get out to the range on this one. Ran into a bit of a snag today. Had mounted a new to me Zeiss Diavari 3-9 X40 on the Whelen with a new set of Talley rings. Discovered that the rear mount was a touch lower than the front ring and I ran out of adjustment on the elevation for the scope. Had to hold high on the widest part of the vertical orange bull to hit where I did. So I figured I had better save the other rounds for another day.

Saw where the first two hit and thought what the hell...lets shoot for group regardless.

I am pleased to say the least . Thank you to all of those before me who offered advise and did the grunt work figuring out the lube, load and sizing..... I did not have the chronograph along today as I was more interested in getting a buddies .358 Win sighted in.

Here are the results for the 35 Whelen using the NOE 360-310 Thumper
R.P case
CCI BR-2 Primer
IMR 4831 @ 49 grains
Boolit sized using a 359 sizing die, that mic's at .3595 ( sized before heat treating )
Heat treated at 425 degrees for an hour IIRC then water quenched and allowed to age 2 weeks.
Lubed in a lachmiller sizer with Dragon lube and then double dipped in Bens Liquid lube
Seated to engage the lands with a bit of resistance.

I can hardly wait to get a full day at the range, after the scope mounts are corrected. Next time out I'll bring the Chronograph too.

Great potential here I think......

I can see it, and that's awesome! I got 4 in one hole, but yet to have 5. Thumper is my newest favorite!

Probably not doing more than about 1850 fps but with a round that size...I think it will make meat

Are you shooting the flat point or the hollow point?

I think it might surprise you when you get the chrono out.

I can see it now! Nope, no surprises there.

I still haven't been able to recover one of them from the berm. Got my arm in there as far as it will go too, about to the elbow.

Got me wondering if a pb version would work paper patched in my 9.3X62?

Nice! You'll be ready to hunt anything, anywhere, any time with that boolit!

What alloy are you using ? Were you able to check the hardness before and after heat treating?

jtaylor.......Clip on wheel weights with 2% sn added. Didn't check the hardness as I have nothing at my disposal to test with. Went with the experience of the many others who have contributed to the research , trial and error using the heavies in the Whelen....Shuz, Blammer, Yodgsandman, 35 Shooter, TXgunut to name a few. All of them found that they couldn't get above 1800 fps until they heat treated. Thanks fellas

Good job! Get the bases figured out yet?

35Whelen
11-20-2016, 12:50 AM
Yes.....lots of measuring and discovered that the rear base is approx .060 thous out from level with the front mount.. I will be calling Talley in the morning and get it sorted. When I bought them I called Talley and the guy advised me that I had a small ring Mauser. I have a large ring Mauser Interarms Mark X measure 1.410 on across the front of the receiver. Checked the measurements of the one piece mounts I got and none of them match anything on their site.....bizarre.

35Whelen,

Cliff Labounty did it for me .....more than 20 years ago. He used to have a shop in Maple Falls Washington. Brilliant man...he designed his own rebore machine that used to cut rifling.......my first Whelen was a rebore. But this one has a stainless Kreiger cut rifled barrel.

Thanks,
He did a rebored a 8mm to a .338 for me about the same time as he did yours..
Back when we could take rifles across the border without a bunch of paperwork..
Never forget his steep driveway and wondered how he got off that hill in icy conditions..

Since you live in the Kootenays I thought Bill Leeper may have chambered your rifle..
That's why I asked..

Ah.....small world eh NRut? Cliff ended up doing the rifles of probably no less than half a dozen friends of mine. Once they saw what the Whelen could do they switched. Yes it was great back in the day when you could just drive back and forth with projects. Cliff sold out quite a while ago from what I remember...too bad he was a brilliant machinist and smith.

The guy that took over Cliff's business lived just up the road from me and did excellent work as well (he was the preferred vendor for Bowen), but unfortunately he passed away last year.

I could spend hours in his shop.....Cliff was always big on heavy for caliber boolits

TxGunNut.....just got off the phone with Talley. Very impressed with them. Told the fellow measurements and mod # on my Talley mounts for my Interarms Mark X. I advised him that a few years back when I ordered the second set of rings the fellow in their service dept was adamant that I owned a small ring Mauser...who was I to argue. Today the service guy was very professional , apologized, said that I did in fact have a large ring Mauser, they made a mistake and would fix and make it right. Said he would ship me out a med set of large ring Mauser mounts right away. Not ten minutes later I get an e-mail showing my shipment was on it's way.....gotta love that for customer service. Very impressed with Talley.
