God Smiled on me this Morning
9:50 this Morning I am taking out the trash for the shop
Walk down to the dumpster.
empty the trash and let the lid slam shut .. German Shepard takes off to chase rabbits
He runs 40 yds in front and hangs a right as I look at him I see a strange shape in the bushhog cutout tunnel of the woods straight ahead .. I stare a few seconds and make out a deer .
Now I am thinking there is NO way I am going to get to the shop and back and the deer still be there
here I go sprinting to the shop about 40 yds to get the Rossi I was going to hunt with tomorrow
sprint back to the dumpster and shape is STILL there .. now thinking it the sun shining thru the trees playing a trick on me ..
creep about 20 feet closer and I see movement ..

Take aim with the open sighted Rossi and let fly a MP 359-640 penta point hollow point
it is 98/2 COWW/HSB, powder coated Orange/Brown, not gas checked and 14.9 grns of H110 going approx. 1675 FPS
nice broadside shot angling slight Shooters Left to right perfect hit takes out heart .. he runs about 15 ft and is dead

You can see the dumpster in the background of the 3rd pic and shop is to the left of where the pic is taken
deer was 90 yds from the dumpster

Wow, as good as it gets. Love my 16" Rossi .357 92s. Was that through and through two hole performance??? Otherwise, let's see the bullet, please.

Congats, Smoke! Nice shot. Proof again, it's WHERE ya hit 'em, not WHAT hits 'em.

Well that proof that new fangled powder coating mess is just a passing fad. It obviously doesn't work.

Very nice Smoke. Very nice indeed.

Nice. But some of our resident "experts" say the .357 ain't no deer gun. I disagree.

I noticed that too jmort. I wasn't going to poke that nest but.... I have said it before deer are not all that hard to kill and do not require massive firepower. Thanks for proving what a well placed shot from a competent shooter will do there Smoke!

/\/\ ... This, LOVE my 16" SS .357. As I have stated before, when I got it (ordered & sight unseen) I really thought I had made a mistake and should have ordered the 20". After a few years of use, I LOVE the 16", really handy in and around UTV's & Jeeps plus shoots better than me ..... [smilie=s:

Alloy was 98/2 WW and HSB (hi speed billet )
I have killed probably 16-18 deer (our limit each year is 2 bucks and all the does we want) since starting casting in April 2013
never check BHN. I cast 50/50 with 2% HSB till accuracy goes away then switch to 98/2 everything is powdercoated . no gas checks till I get above 2000 FPS
so far it has worked just fine for me

nope that'll never work.
the angle is all wrong you'll never make that work.
your too close to the house and the neighbors might hear the shot.
sorry [shaking my head] your gonna have to throw it back.

RFR,

The naysayers are not going to like you encroaching on their territory. They are going to need a coloring book and a therapy dog.

Nice deer there Smoke and that was a nice gun to get him with. Now you know those apples in the dumpster had nothing to do with this ---right!.
Was sneeking thru the woods the otherday and a nice 8 point walk with in 50 ft of me. He never even new I was there. We have been culling the herd of odd antlers and leaving some big ones for breeding stock. Also I was doe hunting but really enjoy watching the big boys as they move around, they do some funny thing.

Nice deer and an interesting rifle. You know, there have been times when I planned and thought about things and struck out and times when things just happened, somehow seems more satisfying when it just happens.

But...but...but.... 357's bounce off of deer.... They will hardy kill squirrels...usually takes 2 shots....

Ok...you did good!:drinks: I love good hunting stories...

Nice deer sir. I too use a 357 magnum for deer. I use 158gr boolits at around 1750fps. It seems to me that I read somewhere that the 357mag has killed more than its fair share of bear and boar as well, and in handguns no less. The blackhawk has taken deer for me and the 77/357 is a true mountain/brush gun.

Yes You can believe what you want but for me as I stated God Smiled on me that Morning

The last couple years have been hard .. father died, Moved mother into new home and many 7-8 hr (driving time) trips to straighten things out, daughter apt destroyed then boyfriend lost his mind , Moved her and the kids in with us then to an apartment , wifes brother suddenly passed 3 weeks ago

This site has been a welcome distraction from the daily grind

Congrats on the awesome buck! Got a mulie doe with my Rossi a couple weeks ago, mine's the 24" in .45 Colt. But I had to work for mine, 6 trips out there and when I finally got a shot it was at 250 yards. It's a miracle I hit her, let alone right through the heart.

250 yards. Good shootin! Wow!! I do that in practice with my Rossi 357, but in the field it's more difficult.

Thanks! I'm thrilled with the results, but at the same time kinda ashamed of even trying such a shot. But that was the only chance I'd had for a shot, time was running out on my tag, and all 8 does were staring straight at me. Wasn't going to be any sneaking closer to them. But the Rossi delivered! Elevation was a bit low, but the windage was dead on. Dang sights covered the doe completely up.

Oh yeah, Used a 255gr. Lee cast boolit pc'd with Smoke's powder! Don't ask me what color it was though, I mix 'em all up.

Really nice buck and good iron sight shooting. Looks like that deer was dead set on hanging around for dinner.
Great story and glad it worked out for you.

So, you didn't have to do pre season scouting, you didn't have to get up at 4 o clock in the morning, you didn't have to drive 60 miles, you didn't have to bundle up like the Michelin Man, you didn't have to walk back in a mile and half, you didn't have to drag or cart it out that far, you didn't have to you scents, calls, gps, study the weather or hunting pressure and ya got horns with some fine dinner plate cuisine, must be nice. congrats

This was a "bonus " deer
believe me when I say I have put my time in driving, sitting in freezing cold , walking for what seems like forever
When these things happen all you can do is say THANK YOU JESUS
