I have just begun to melt down a large quantity of range scrap lead and find it to be very soft. I have a quantity of wheel weight lead and some linotype. What is a good mixture to shoot in hand guns (revolver as well as semi-auto)? Thanks in advance for the info.

Download the alloy calculator provided by a member here. It is a sticky in this forum. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?105952-Lead-alloy-calculators

Provides an Excel spread sheet where you plug in weights of different types of lead and it calculates the approx. hardness and alloy mix.
If you don't have Microsoft Office to open Excel file with then you can download this open source (free) office software and the alloy calculator works fine there too.
http://www.openoffice.org/download/ Opens with Calc application.

It will ask about changing format of the file when closing. I almost always said keep current format but the few times I didn't nothing broke in the calculator that I could see.

most find putting a little tin in the range scrap works just fine.
checking an alloy right after you cast it will give you a false reading.
but since you got the other stuff mix the scrap 50-50 with the ww's.
