View Full Version : They're starting to multiply...

A year ago I had 2 leverguns, the Glenfield 36G was inherited from a great uncle, and the Winchester 9422M was rescued from the LGS. Within the last year I bought the Rossi 92 .357, was gifted the Marlin 39A from a family friend, and just added the Winchester 94 30-30 last weekend. Be warned, lever guns are like rabbits, they multiply [emoji5]

Very nice.
I see you still have a couple opening slots in that rack. Down the road. Do you suppose a Savage model 99 could find its way into a already dandy look'in rack of levers maybe?

I have admired the Savage 99 for years, just yet to come across the right one! It will most likely be my next levergun though.

Yes, lever guns are a lot like rabbits. I can certainly attest to that. I'm not sure which brand is more prone to the affliction, but Winchesters and Marlins seem to be right up there and a couple of 99s attest to their ability too.

I would love to find a cheap rusty barrel Savage 99 and send it to JES for a rebore to 358 Win. It would find a good home next to my model 336 35 Rem and model 36 30-30 and my Savage 35 Whelen.

You have some great looking rifles there! 👍

Is your 35 Whelen a model 99 as well?

No. It is a Savage model 116.
I think the 35 Whelen is too long for the Savage 99 action.
I did make it sound like it was lever gun though, didn't I.
I just like .35 caliber rifles. That is why I listed it in there with the 35 rem and wanting a 358 Win.

You are correct. Fifteen years ago I bought my first and now I have 15.

Ah, that makes sense. I was thinking it was too long as well.

They do tend to breed fairly often. I've managed to not buy one in awhile. That needs to change :)

they tend to stack up on their own.... somehow.
and some of them come in identical twins for some reason.

Nice rifles, your 94/22M is a very nice addition.

Thank you. It doesn't get shot a lot, but I often take it out of the safe just to cycle the action a few times, then wipe it down and put it away. [emoji4]

I set out to find an 1894FG (41 mag) several years ago. Once I bought that, all of these levers started showing up in front of me at "crazy low" prices. It appears that we have a whole generation or two that could care less about grandpa's lever gun and as soon as they get it, they just sell it for next to nothing! I now have 10 and am starting to see that I need to quit this, or I'm going to have to buy another safe just for the levers. I have yet to find any gun (lever or not) that is any more pleasing to work the action and shoot, than a Marlin 39A Mountie from the 50's. All lever guns conjure up my childhood memories of hiding high in the rocks with my buddy. I was shootin my Model 92 BB and he was throwing "dirt clod grenades" and we were killing hostiles from every direction. Hey, it was MY gun so he had to throw dirt clods! We won, of course, or I wouldn't be here to tell you about it. Sometimes I pull one out and think, "I'm gonna send that off to be re-blued". Then I stop and really think, nah, I like it just the way it is.

I have a Glenfield 30 and it is one of the most accurate rifles I have ever owned. How does yours shoot?

Huntrick64-
You're absolutely right. My 39A is a 1959 and it's as sweet and smooth as they come.

Ferguson-
Mine is a great shooter as well. I don't normally care for scope on lever actions, but it seems to fit this rifle well. I have a 155gr cast load using Trail Boss that is remarkably accurate and has absolutely no recoil.

The Mountie 39A is a 1958 and is a tack driver. The most accurate .22 I have ever owned, of any action.

Yep, my Dad has a '64 Mountie. Both his and mine are incredibly accurate rifles. Almost like they shoot where you're thinking instead of where you're pointing 😁

My 21 year-old son, whose eyes are great and who doesn't drink caffeine, is quickly forgotten by any turtle within 75 yards when he is holding that Mountie. I will quickly trade for another one if given the opportunity.

I think the half magazine and no barrel bands is what makes the Glenfield 30 so accurate. Marlin should bring it back. Mine makes sub-1" groups more often than it has a right to!

Be sure to only look at serial numbers above 900,000, when Savage modified the action, extended it from 2.600 to 2.800" to market the longer Winchester cartridges (.308. .284 and .358). Not sure if the rotor is specific to caliber ... another aspect to consider.

My addiction stared with a single Marlin...

Honey, I need another safe to secure my rifles? :drinks:

Nice start, very nice. Been hankering a bit for a 9422 lately myself. My first levergun followed me home close to 35 years ago and I was able to keep the population somewhat under control until a few years ago. I honestly don't know what happened but it sure has been fun!

You know I never really knew anything about the 9422's until I bought mine. I gave $550 for it, if I remember correctly. Didn't realize at the time how good of a deal that was. Now I see them priced anywhere from $700-900. Would love to find one of the trapper models in long rifle...

One of the recent levers I picked up is a very slick 9422M, made before they put checkering on the stock. They really are a beautiful rifle. I think mid 70's. It doesn't look like it has been shot much, and it is a beauty. The only problem is, I have never been a WMR guy and have very limited ammo. It shoots like a dream, but the cost of the ammo is a little prohibitive. I will probably end up trading it off for another lever in 41 or 357. My buddy has been trying to buy it because he has a matching one in 22lr.

I'm kind of the opposite. WMR is one of my favorites. I have the 9422M, Ruger American, single-six, and an NAA deringer all in 22 mag. Would love to lay hands on a 9422 XTR in long rifle and have a pair though!
