I have a good friend with two boys that I have been teaching to shoot
since they were 5 yrs old. They are 11 now, and love the .22 rifles and
pistols, and one likes to bust claybirds with the .410. His brother doesn't
like the recoil of the .410, which thumped him 3 yrs ago and he still won't
try again.
I tried something new last range session. I had their Dad bring his 7x57
Charles Daly Mauser 98 and he shot a few different loads for groups. He got
a great group at 100 with Prvi Partisan 139 gr ammo. I had him shoot 6 rds
for the group, to create 6 empties for the next planned item on the agenda.
I asked the boys if they wanted to shoot the 7mm - and after the big kaboom
and such, they allowed as how they didn't want to try it. I then said, how about
if I can promise you no kick more than 1 1/2 times their .22s? They were doubtful
but listened. I produced a Lee Loader and we retired to the clubhouse.
Each boy reloaded 3 rds with a 120 gr jacketed bullet and 10 gr Unique. I directed
but they ran the hammer and did all the work. Each was pretty proud of their
three rounds at the end.
The first shot was a bit tenative, but the kid broke into a big grin and said " It
didn't kick bad at ALL !!!" He made a 1" group at 50 yds off the bench. His
brother, always more recoil shy, pulled the first one about 2" but put the others
about an inch apart. He was pleased, too. He really hates recoil. :???:
After this, they asked to shoot the AR15 and Mini14 - which we told them would
kick a bit more than the special loads that they made up. They loved it, shooting
BIG guy's guns !
Yesterday their Dad called and said that anti-recoil boy is asking to get reloading gear
so they can make some more ammo for the 7x57. Dad has an old press and some
gear, started assembling the stuff and never got around to it. Now we will finish
out his gear and the boys will start reloading for the centerfire rifles.
Another 3 converts, it was a good day last Saturday at the range. :drinks:
