Took the k31 out with about 30 rounds this AM. All loaded with 34 grains 4064 with Lee's 180 sized to .308 in Lino. Only dif was the lube. Half had 50/50 the other half this stuff called micro lube that I got a bunch of in a deal. Shot the 50/50 first. Got the same group I got last time I tried this load, about 3" at 100. Took my time with about 1 minute between shots. Chronographed about 2060 fps for both loads. Then I tried the second batch. First several shots where about 2" then all hell broke loose. Groups opened up to 10". Could the change in lube have this big of an affect or are we looking at something like the rifle heating up and maybe the stock affecting it???
Going to try agian tomorrow and see what happens if the rain holds off

Sounds like a lube failure to me. Ineffective lube can easily screw up groups
that bad. How much lead in the bore?

Did you inspect the muzzle for a lube star before you tried the second
batch? How about after the second batch?

No lead in the bore at all. I ran some real tight patches thru it and not a bid of lead. Maybe I should run some brushes thru it. Hate to do that since I have been shooting it all year without scrbbing it. Think instead I will load some up and take it out agian.

Happy Fathers Day!

check your stock screws, tighten the front screw down hard, then you can adjust your group size by looseing or tightening the tang screw, when correct loc tite it.

At that speed lube failure is a possibility. Or it just maybe the gun doesn't like that lube even if it's not "failing". IIRC Micro lube was more of a pistol lube.

Bret4207 thanks. I asked about it, the micro lube, before and no one seemed to know what the lube was used for.

TTcharlie, I have read that on the swiss forum but never have tried it. I checked the scope but not the stock screws yet. I will double check that.

If it were me....I'd scrub bore and then use JB Bore paste. Then I would shoot it to give the Micro Lube a fair shot. I never used Micro lube but knew it was advertised at least thru 1994. You might have had a lube failure due to the 50/50 not being chemically capable with Micro Lube. To test anything I always start with a real clean barrel to eliminate that as a reason for poor performance. Micro lube is advertised in my gun Digest publlished Handloading 14th edition 1994. afish4570

some lubes don't play nice together. in my experience most lubes don't like to mix.

Yup, rimfires don't like it either. You have to fire a few 'foulers' to get them to come right.

It may be the scope. It is an old weaver 2.5. Never did get a good group out of it using some GP11. Somethings else is wrong other then the loads.

Not the scope. MTgun44 was right. It was leaded. It had a nice lube star with the 50/50 didn't check the micro lube. I should have thought leading as soon as groups went to hell. My inexperience showed badly on this one. The tip off was when the GP11 wouldn't shoot and the scope I can see now is fine. A lot of cleaning ahead of me.

4/0 steel wool or the Chore Boy copper scrubber on a worn brush will remove that leading poste haste! Won't hurt your barrel either.

+1 for the chore boy technique. If it makes you uncomfortable to use kitchen supplies in your rifle, it is sold commercially by "Big 45 Frontier Metal Cleaner". Won't believe how good it is until you try.

I have had pretty good luck (consistent 2" at 100 yds) with Micro Lube in a 98K Mauser, Lee 323-175, ~ 30 surplus 4895 and WSR primer, giving better groups than with "The Big Melt" Felix lube! I hope it isn't just a pistol lube:-D Didn't notice any unusual deposits in the bore.

You know, there is a group buy going on right now for a boolit specifically designed for the K-31. It's listed under "Custom 165" or some such thing. Sounds like you should be in on that purchase.
