I had the day off so I decided to go through some old boxes of gun stuff. Found a receipt for my first T/C Renegade. At the time in July of 1995 I worked at a local Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge dealership and had some reward points for gift certificates from a new vehicle prep. program. $700 dollars and the dealership owner thought it was a great reward program until he realized he was responsible for 1/2 and Chrysler the other 1/2. I took the rewards points in Bass Pro Shop coupons, if you took something from the Chrysler book the values were double retail (one mec loader or $700 bass pro...no Brainerd for me). A 5 hour road trip and my wife and I were in Springfield for the weekend. A Remington 700 VS and a T/C Renegade in .54 Caliber ended up on the negotiation table.

We then went to the outlet and I bought 2 more T/C that looked to be new, but open box returns. I remember if I had a Credit Card I would have came home with a couple more as the outlet had some really good prices on the returns.

I remember bailing hay as a kid in the mid to late 80's to get money to buy powder and reloading supplies. Dad would drive me to the next town over to buy the stuff. I cannot say $5 was the world, but when you worked hard for it....

That Renegade was $279, just in case the receipt cannot be read very well. The open box White Mountain carbines were somewhere between $125 and $155, both 50 cal. One was flintlock and one was caplock. I remember we were near penniless on the way home.

I picked up a .50 Renegade last weekend at the big Tulsa fun show. It looks like it's never been fired. has what looks to be a piece of green felt under the hammer. It's my first and I was surprised it has a 1:66 barrel.

Edit: actually it's not felt. It looks like it's copper. Maybe it has been fired! ;-)

It looks like a fired cap was left in the hammer.

what he said. looks like a fired cap that has turned to complete Verdigris corrosion. doesn't necessarily mean it's been fired but it has had a cap or two snapped maybe just to check trigger function.

Looks like corrosion to me, even tho I know absolutely Nothing about muzzleloaders. I’m only posting cause that is one nice rifle, and I just won an auction for a .50 Renegade. Should have it late next week or early the next week. I just hope it’s as nice looking as yours. His photos weren’t anything to write home about.

Yep. Looks like it is a busted cap. And all the green fuzz isn't felt ;-)

Question on the 1:66 barrel, were those manufactured in a specific time frame, or did they just not make many? My serial is in the 4,500's

Looking forward to hearing more about yours, wingspar. Be sure and share pics when you get it. Did you get it off gunbroker?

Yep, I'm a huge Renegade fan and I know Bubba speaks the truth!

It has been my experience that any 1" 1:66 factory bbl from T/C is a rarity, but there are a few because I've seen 'em.
I have also seen a 15/16", pre warning, pre model stamp, that was I:66 but the guy that owned it was not about to get up off of it, even with several VERY attractive offers.
I have inquired for some time now about a 1" 1:66 with no luck.
I may be really antsy to get my hands on one, but I ain't no fool....which I seem to have stamped on my forehead.
Jus'sayin....

There is a fellow on GB from Florida who uses a generic pictures of a Renegade.

In the picture it looked decent, so I bought one from him, however when I got it in the mail it looked terrible. The bore was as black as a liberal nut job's heart and rest of the rifle had chips, nicks, scratches and dents that clearly were not in the pictures. After playing phone tag for about a week I finally got a hold of the guy. He used nearly every excuse in the book including "he sent me the wrong one" and "normally they sell for much more". I had saved the pictures from the auction and took picture of the on he sent, so I could point out the differences. Finally he agreed to take it back. It was about a 30 day ordeal by the time the dust settled...I did get my money back and shipping. It was a Hassel and GB tends to side for the seller. Just a word of caution...I have bought a few on GB and several parts off eBay...it doesn't hurt to CYA when it comes to online transactions.

A free tip for buyers that seem to get scammed. If you suspect a generic picture, request an updated picture with an item you choose, placed next to the item for sale. say, like a can of beans.

I have an active thread titled Opinions on Thompson Center 54 Cal. Renegade (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?319789-Opinions-on-Thompson-Center-54-Cal-Renegade) . Obviously I decided on .50 cal instead of .54. When I get it, I’ll post photos in that thread. I’ve posted one of the sellers photos in that thread. Yes, I got it off GB.

Shot the new (to me) Renegade for the first time over Thanksgiving. I thought I was going to have a chance to sight it in, but all the kiddos were in a line to go next. Fun was had by all.

Cool. Mine arrives tomorrow. Probably be a while before I shoot it. No powder, caps or accessories yet, but the weather is horrible. Sun? Haven’t seen the guy in weeks. Liquid sunshine in abundance.

I really hope you guys enjoy your Renegades!

I have posted this before, but sometimes some things just need to be repeated again. Especially when you have real strong feelings about the subject, and you're feeling somewhat elated that others are sharing your views.

Anyway, over the years I have owned a lot of different muzzleloaders, and I've enjoyed all of them. I'm in my mid 70's and I got my first muzzleloader around 1952 / 1953.

Like many others, a strong interest in both Caplock vs Flintlock has always been present, and comparing one against the other has accounted for some of the most interesting and fun times I have ever experienced.
For many years I was strictly a Flint fella, anything else was little more than just plain boring.
After all those years of comparison, the jury is still out on which one I prefer, as they are both winners!

I was never thrilled to death following the introduction of the T/C Hawken, albeit it was fun to shoot and very pleasant to look at.
The very first T/C Hawken I bought was all of $115.00, out the door, and came with a Sharon Barrel, which I later sold for more than I had originally paid for the entire rifle.
If that gun / barrel ever shot any better than the barrels that I have today for my Renegade, I was certainly never astute enough to see it! That barrel had a GREAT name, and likely for all the right reasons, but today's barrels can be every bit as good, IMHO.

Sometime in the late 1980's early 90's I was introduced to the .54 Renegade.
Plain Jane, nothing shinny, no bells, and no whistles, while still maintaining good clear lines. I liked that.
The one thing that has always bugged me was that whirly / swirly trigger guard on the Hawken and the Renegade.
Once I got the hang of what that old gun really liked, (as it seemed to get along pretty well with about anything I could stuff down the barrel), a special kind of alliance developed between me and that old gun.

Over the years I have added a few things, changed out that terrible looking trigger guard into a more round, shotgun type, and installed a 11" steel "toe-plate".

I have also added a few extra barrels; .50 Cal. 1:28 from Green Mountain, a .56 cal. smooth bore, and a .58 cal. Hawken Boar, all 1" barrels.
I also had a .45 cal. barrel but I sold it because of the weight. A one inch .45 cal. barrel is just to darn heavy to pack around hunting...great for the bench, but that's kinda where it ends.

Here are a few pictures of what the old girl looks like now....her name is Lady Hawg.

I use a Lyman 57 rear sight, and a Lyman 17 Globe front with the fast twist barrel.
The double-set triggers are also nice with that barrel.

Sorry I got so long winded....but some subjects just need a bit more talkin' than others.

That's a good lookin' rifle, RBak!

I'm thinking a flint-lock is next on my list. Will keep an eye peeled as I'm sure I'll come across one at a good price if I"m patient.

'Nother Renegade fan here.
Want to come up with a simple to manufacture clamp-on-the-barrel mount for pistol scopes. Using a clamp-on with a pistol scope on the .52 paper patch barrel and it's pretty nice to make a ragged hole for a change.

Could an aluminum 1 1/2" x 3" x 1/4" wall structural rectangular tube be used to make a clamp on mount?
If you cut off one smaller side of the rectangle and it fit over the one inch barrel then some through bolting on the bottom side ought to keep it from moving. Think I will get a price on some tube.
