Well I had a great morning in the woods. About 8:30 I had two coyotes come by and I managed to shoot one. He rolled down a hill then took off on a hard run. Never did find him and didn't find sign of a hit. I may have shot over him, not sure.

At 9:45 this buck came sneaking by below a Ridgeline off to my left. Luckily I was standing at the time but all I could see was his head and neck so I put the cross hairs on the base of his neck and let him have it. He flipped over sideways and disappeared from view but I never saw him run. He was laying on his back right where I shot him. I don't think he even took a step.
He's not the biggest buck but just a nice average one. Didn't matter to me. My load of the RCBS 35-200 fngc over 35.0 hrs 3031 proved deadly as it was a complete passthrough and he never took a step. Man I love the .35 Rem.

Agreed. That's a nice buck and rifle.

Could you tell me more about the rifle. It looks like it's a matte dark stainless or perhaps cerakoted?

Rifle is a 1955 Marlin 336 .35 with Ballard rifling. I traded for it this spring as a project rifle. I had it cerakoted tungsten grey with flat black accents, shortened the barrel to 18" and installed a Boyd's grey laminate stock set. Finished off with a grey and black paracord sling. Turned out to be one awesome gun. This was it's first hunt with its nrw clothes. I wish I knew the history of it .

That's a nice buck, and a very fine rifle! I missed a doe this mourning at 50yds, crazy bullet hit a limb, and I thought I had those bullets trained!

that looks like a nice buck.
big enough to have meat on it's bones, and young enough to not need a meat grinder to chew it.

I have a .32 Special Marlin of that era that could be your rifle's twin (before). I also have a real old .35 that has the longer barrel and half magazine, love it. Killed a couple of deer including a nice buck in S.C. about 20 years ago, also used 35 grains of 3031, but used a Remington bulk packed 200 grain jacketed bullet. Worked real well.

I love the old Marlins and probably would have left it as is, but it certainly is interesting. Nice deer too. Glad Indiana's rifle deer season is working out for you guys.

Good job! Nice rifle. Please tell us about the rifle.also what alloy are you using.Did you recover a bullet?

My alloy is ww with 20% pure and a touch of tin. Air cooled and let set for a week or two the run thru a .360 die in a Lyman 45 lubed with Ben's Red.
The boolit passed thru and the exit was slightly larger than the entrance. Big enough that my thumb fit in the hole so there was some expansion. Either way it dropped him dead quick.

That's how it's done. How in the world did you kill a deer without a heavy barrel sniper rifle with a 8x24X mil dot? I like your rifle and that buck very well! Best, Thomas.

Nice going! I like the 35 Rem. a lot. I'm currently working on load development, for my T/C G2.

Outstanding, congrats. Here in Ohio we have to wait until 11/28 for our gun season. With all your stories I just can't wait.
Question: Where are you guys getting loading info for IMR 3031? Lyman 4th. edition doesn't list that powder. Sierra manual has it but for use with jacketed bullets. Some help please? Thanks.

Not sure any more where I got my loading ingo with 3031 but it sure works good for me. There is probably something better but I haven't found it yet. I've tried H335, 4227, 2400 , 3031 and leverevolution. LVR works good with 200 gr Rem corelok.

I use vintage reloading manuals for cast Boolits as people were still very interested in cast shooting in those times! The powders haven't changed so much you can't use the data! I'm using 3031 and 4197 in my 38-55 & 405 JESS they are working very good for me.

180909 Here is a couple of groups and notes on the target with my 38-55 rebore by JESS, 5 groove rifling. I have dialed it in even tighter since shooting the rifle a couple hundred rounds now!

That is just icing on the cake for a summer project rifle, looks like you got your cake and is going to be palatable eating it as well. congrats
