Has anyone seen any of the M-1 carbines advertised for $999 at Big 5 yet? They're made by Inland if I recall rightly. Is that any kind of a deal? Are they junkers? Buckshot, I'd expect you to be able to report on this!

.................They had one at out local Big 5. I looked at it in the rack behind the counter, and it looked to be in decent shape. At least the wood was, but I didn't ask to handle it. Not for a grand. I haven't paid any attention to M1 Carbine prices in the past several years.

Huh! I traded a reimport in decent shape for an 1894C back in 2000. Guess I should have held onto it...

The CMP is still selling Carbines in the 500 to 600 range, so I would look there first...

How much does that new Ruger NRA .223 carbine sell for?

Actually the ones made by IMI and marketed under a couple of different names in this country are far more accurate than the military ones. Last time I priced them they were under $600 USD. Same applies to the Auto Ordnance made by Kahr. The .30 carbine lost any value it ever had for me when the SKS in 7.62X 39 hit our beaches. Better gun, better caliber, lower price.

...............Right now I'd say the re-arsenaled Russian M91/30's and M44's. Also a M24/47 with a good barrel is also a good buy. Some of the later can have rather poorish barrels, so be sure they offer a hand picked or you can look and pick.

I looked one over at Big 5, and it was worn out, and worth about 1/2 the $1000.00 asking price.
The next week, it was sold.

Strangely enough, in usa, every gun store has used AR- 5 rifles growing on the racks like flies. And more coming on used racks each week.

The 30 carbine however, if I see one on Saturday, and go back next week, it is gone.

If I were in the market, I would seriously consider a new Kel Tek. I have looked at them, and they are nice guns. Selling for about 600 bucks.

I bought my last one about a year ago for $300.00, (privately) it's an Underwood with it's barrel stamped 10-42. Sr# 3500xx probably first day of production at Underwood since their Sr# block began at 350001...What a bargain! :drinks:

At the gun shows around the Harrisburg, Pa area, a decent carbine goes for $600.00 and up, depending on maker, year, condition, and if it's a re-import or not. They gotta be REAL nice to warrant a price tag over $900.00 though!

I'd look for a K31 in 7.5X55. Mine is a spectacular shooter and I bought it on sale at Big 5 for $99. They have gone up since then, but you might be able to find one at a good price at AIM.

One could also be on the lookout for a nice VZ24 in 8mm. I picked up one a Big 5, but haven't shot any cast out of it yet.

+1 for the K31, mine shoots 1.5" groups at 300 yards with swiss surplus (match grade) ammo. with my own cast 180gr boolits it shoots a little over 1 MOA.

.5 MOA? Is this consistant or your best group?

CfI, how many rounds per group?

groups were 5 shots and yes, that is my best, but most groups are fairly close...well under 1 MOA. at 500 yards my average groups are under 4". i haven't tried it at any longer ranges (hopefully the thousand yard line at my range will open soon so i can extend my range a bit). at 500 my cast boolits stay within 2 MOA about 80% of the time. i'm hoping to improve on that in time.

FWIW.......Read the latest "American Rifleman" for the value on M-1 Carbines. One M-1A1 with "history" went for 20K +at auction..........yes that's $20,000.00![smilie=1:
There is much varied opinion on the value of Military surplus weapons, keep them original or sporterize/cannibilize them..............(oops just gave away my position)
History should be preserved as well as history's weapons.
Clean, non-imported M-1 Carbines are and will continue to bring $700.00 + at just about any gun show.
Even the DCM ones have not driven down prices that much.
Import ones that have been shot out ,worn out and abused by some 3rd world country can be had for less money. Rebuilding them will cost big$$$.

Art-
The Swiss K31 will do that with the Swiss military ammo. Swiss military ammo is premium stuff and will shoot match grade groups a long range. The K31 is inferior to the K11 when it comes to cast though. The K11 will shoot sub MOA with cast very regularly.
