this morning i dug out my colt new service and decided to slug it. the bore slugged to .428 and the cylinder throat was .433 the question is what bullet diameter do you recommend? the gun lettered to 1922 and is in good shape so i would like to shoot it. i will be buying some cast bullets and it seems to me that perhaps a .430 would be good.john

It this a 44-40 or 44 Special? As a rule of thumb the cast bullets should be the same size as the cylinder throat, but if you are not casting your own you have to take what they sell. A fairly soft cast bullet will "slug" up .001 - .002 to fill the throat. A hard bullet will not.

That old, obsolete Colt is dangerous... you need to send it to me for proper disposal! :kidding:

Actually, I am quite jealous. I think you will be fine with .429 to .431 bullets or even with .433 bullets. How much longer than the COAL if the loaded round of 44 Spl is the cylinder/chamber? The jump with the smaller-than-chamber mouth bullet shouldn't be all that long that it will "rattle around" while reaching the forcing cone. Keep us apprised of your progress.
