I just slugged the barrel on my new rifle. First time doing this and it looks like it is .459". Is this common on the newer Marlins? From reading on here I would need to be using a boolit .001-.002" over this size for the best accuracy?

Not sure on the first part of your question, but regards the bullet sizing; yes 1-2 thousandths over slugged size.

You're lucky you could push a slug through it. My own 1895CB is stamped so deep I couldn't get a slug past the writing. After firelapping you can read the Marlin logo on the inside of the barrel with a bore scope where the firelap bullets wore the blueing off. Just use .460" bullets and you'll be good.

Right as mentioned size at .460 and go to town. :)

Just FYI, my older Marlin 1895 with the microgroove barrel slugged to .4595. The standard .458 CBs gave horrible accuracy. I found some that are sized .460 and the accuracy improved a bit, but nothing to get excited about. I figure I'd have to go to .461-.462 to get tolerable accuracy. However, the amount I'd be out for molds, dies, etc, just didn't make sense for a rifle I had not planned to shoot much.

I'll probably sell the rifle to someone who already has the necessary equipment.

Since both older and newer Marlins are slugging oversize, I can't see getting another Marlin.

Good luck,
Richard
