View Full Version : Kinetic Energy Calculator
Just passing this along. It is a very simple tool to calculate the energy of your loads. You just need to know the weight in grains and the speed in feet per second.

And if you want to see how it's calculated:

And if you are somewhere that you only have a calculator, just do the following:
BulletWeight(in grains) * Velocity(in fps) * Velocity(in fps) / 450436
The 450,436 takes into account the various unit conversion factors and such.
Thanks Navy Vet. The calculation is what I was really after when I was searching the Internet!

Glad to help... Simple kinetic energy forumla -- KE = 1/2 * mass * velocity2
You just have to convert units of weight into units of mass and then into units that we normally deal with respect to bullet energy (i.e. ft-lbs).
Now, if you *really* wanted to get picky, you would figure in the difference in the gravitational constant given your current location.
