I see that Lyman makes the Plains pistol in .54 Cal, my dad has always wanted a 54 Cal pistol and i'd like to get him one. Any other options out there? Any hands on experience with the Lyman? I see it available in kit form, or factory completed. I REALLY like the looks of the Patriot, but from what i see it was only available in 36 and 45 Cal.

Hard to find, but T/C made a Scout pistol in .45, .50, & .54. They are top shelf. I've hunted with them and they are superior. Solid as can be. Trigger can usually use some smoothing, but the one I hunted with was just fine out of the box.

You don't see pistols in 54 much so options would be few.

Buy the Lyman with confidence. I have the .54, a friend the .50, did some minor changes. I changed sights, put some steel , slim fixed sigths, filed to zero. I polished the lock plate, and retapped the patent breech to use 1/4 x28 nipples like a TC, since they are much more available. Rested off a sandbag, they shoot a ragged hole at 25yds, and last time out shooting, I hit 4 tennis balls in a row at 50yds, laying across a block of wood, like I would the rail on a deer stand. I shoot 45-50 grains of 3fffg black, 530 ball and .018 patch, lubed with Olive oil. Hope to take a late season doe with it here in KY!

Good gun built one with my oldest. Lots of fun.
