I have the short model and am going to start the 06 on a cast diet.
Will the short work or do I need to get the long?

30 Long for the 06

30 long is the right answer if you want to take a full stroke with the press-- but if you have 30 short you can still do it. I have 30 short, and I have learned to "feel" when the expander section hits the 30-06 neck. First there is slight tension as the .308 portion of the expander slides into the neck, then a little "k-chunk" as the next step of the expander slips into the neck. I stop the stroke when I feel that little step-up and they all come out really nice. Once you get the feel for it it's really easy.

Yes. If I understand your question correctly; it is as easy as either resetting the lock ring after screwing the die body up in the press (should you want to retain the 30-06 setting) Or, screw up the stem to the new required height to accommodate the longer 30-06 case.

Those are the two ways to raise the expander and flair portion with respect to the location the case mouth is at the top of the press stroke.
