Opportunity to get a little IMR-4227 cheap. What is it good for?

Update this, I am looking at using it solely in 44 mag for cast boolits and possibly Copper jacketed. I have a Kieth style 4 cavity 240 gr lyman mold and a 2 cav. 215 gr swc.

218 Bee, 32-20, 357 Mag., 41 Mag. and 44 Mag. Can also be used as a fair substitute for SR 4759 in smokeless-black duplex loads.

is this a better choice to shoot cast 240-250 SWC, in 44 mag than H-110?

I would like to hear personal experiences as I have never tried it.

Sorry, can't testify about the .44 Mag. but I'll bet that 44Man will come along before long, he knows.
All I can provide is what the book says...

I just picked up a pound myself. I plan on trying it in .30 carbine but I also see it in load manuals for cast rifle loads.

If it's less than $20/lb jump on it. Do the research and if you need it, grab it. If you dont need it, grab it.

I use it in the 300BLK, 44Mag, 357Mag, and 30 Carbine.

I use it in my Ruger SRH in .44mag. I also use it in my Ruger SRH 480. My uncle gave me a big jug of it and I switched to it after I ran out of 2400. In my pistols it leaves a little unburnt powder in the barrel but it cleans out easily.

It is my go to powder for cast in 357 mag.

it can have some problems in the 44 mag when things get hot.
it is a good powder in the 30-06 with cast, and the 300 BO for AR rifles at sub sonic and the 445 super mag with heavier bullets/boolits.
the 30 carbine and similar case sizes do well with it too.

if it's available at a good price grab it, you'll soon sort it out.

It is awesome in 44mag, close to 2400, some of the upper end loads are compressed.

I tried it in my 454 and 44 magnum I don't like it
I'll stick with unique dots and 2400 H110

22 hornet I have four pounds of it and tried it in my .22 hornet, but at the starting levels in my Lyman manual for 50 grain cast boolits, it wasn't particularly accurate. I'm going to back it off and see if things improve.

I use it in my Schuetzen rifle - 32-40. Meters very consistently for breach seating.

Heavy 45 Colt 300 gr. bullet with 21.0 grs. is my best load for the 92,375 Win. 310 gr. bullet useful powder for me.

Thank you to OS OK for posting the pics from the article. I had just asked about replacement powders for SR4759 the other day, and 4227 was one I was now considering. The article lists a load for the 45-70 with a 400 gn boolit, just what I need. Just hope that I can find some locally.

I have an old copy of the IMR Handloaders guide that shows IMR 4227 loads in the 22-24 grain range for 44 Magnum and a 240 gr jacketed bullet. I don't have a 44 mag so I cannot attest to how good it is.

Lyman says use it for 454 Casull. 29 gr under Barnes 250gr HP. Current So. Cal price is $30.00/lb. If you can get it cheaper jump on it!

I use it for cast boolits in:

- .303 British
- .308 Win
- .44 mag Marlin

I like it! It is my go to powder for the Marlin and I like it better than H110 because you can download safely. I don't always want to shoot max loads.

I have used IMR4227 successfully under boolits from 240 gr. to 300 grs. in the .44 mag.

According to the books, it does not produce as high a velocity as H110 but it is close enough for me.

I have never had any complaints with IMR4227.

I shoot it in my 44mags under 240-250gr cast, staying at the high end of the load recommendations. I have found that IMR 4227 burns cleanest at the higher end of the pressure spectrum, at compressed or near compressed levels in my guns, rifle and pistol. If your intentions are soft , reduced loads, it will get dirty.

I had some kicking around and gave it a try in 44 magnum with some 180s and 240grain boolits both P/Ced. Both were quite accurate. It's not quite as hot as H110 but is still quite effective for shootn steel.

Only use it for .30 carbine, works great in my M1 & Automag. 13.6 gr under a 110 RN. Not the cheapest, One pound yields about 500 loads. I'm tickled if I can find it @ < $22.00 / pound in an 8 pound jug.

Usually anything the discontinued 4759 was used for only a little more of it. I use it in 30-06, 8x57 and 30-40 Krag.
I like it.

flint45,

I understand fully. - I paid for my first "deer rifle" by peddling dressed catfish (for a buck each) door to door, off my trotline. = a Model 141 pump-rifle in .35 Remington.
(Wishing that I'd been smart enough to keep it.)

17-20 grains of 4227 under just about any cast bullet 150-200 grains. Pressure won't be an issue. Twist rate will decide accuracy; by that statement I mean that a fast twist 308 (1:10) will need a lower charge to maintain an RPM rate below about 140.000. This equals about 1900 fps. Slower twist barrels can handle more velocity: My 30 XCB rifles (30x57) are all 1:14 and 21 grains 4227 gives 2100 fps and group around 1.25 MOA consistently.

Bjornb I agree. I'm getting pretty much the same results with a 30-06 with 1-13 twist 21 grs 4227 works well. For a 10 twist 30-06 19 grs works well

I use it in subsonics for the 300 whisper and 220(9.5gr) or 240s(10.5gr), 338 BR and the 300 gr SMK(13.2gr) and the 510 whisper with 650gr anything (28.5gr) . Works pretty good but 2400, AA1680 and VV N110 work better. If its cheap and you're just blasting anyway its worth buying.
