I got a 50 Cal T/C Inline muzzle-loader from a friend who has given up hunting. Bought a bunch of 44 and 45 cal sabots, now I'm itching to try some cast boolits in it. Anyone else done this? I want to try the NOE version of the 434421 sized to .430 and the Lee C430-310 in it. Hopefully I won't run into any RPM threshold issues with it. The Hornady 250 and 300 gr. SST saboted j-words are scary accurate in this rifle, but they are a bit spendy.

The NOE should be exceptional even to a couple of hundred yards. The only thing is the SSTs will give a bit better BC to fight the wind and a little less drop. The Lee 310 will need a GC on it or you will need to mill off the GC section so it sits in the sabot a bit better. Many cast boolits for the saboted smoke pole. My general purpose go to boolit is the Lee 240 gr RN for the smoke pole. I use the 200 gr TC shockwaves if I am going to sit in a field though where the shots are going to range 100 to 200 to maybe 300 yds. The Lee 240 RN will do 200 yds though just not quite as efficient as the shockwave when the wind and drop are concerned. IMO if you start going over 100 gr powder charge you will need to cast your boolits at least 33/66 WW/Pb so they hold their shape on ignition. My charge for accuracy is 120 gr. So, far the deer hit even with marginal or less than perfect rib shot have traveled less distance after the shot with the Lee 240 RN than all the packaged stuff even with larger powder charges. Then again it depends on the spot where you will hunt. I have not got to test it yet, but I was wanting to test the Lee 310 hard cast with GC or milled off in the elderberry thickets to plow through instead of mushrooming on a 1.5 elderberry sapling and stay on target even for raking shots and have the meplat do its thing on the deer.

Thanks for the reply and advise on the gas check on the 310's. All the 310's that I have cast right now are lubed, so I may cast up a few more and seat the checks in a Lee push through. The NOE 434421 boolits are cast from a fairly soft alloy, 1/3/96. The 310's are cast of Hardball, so I may try those first and report back. Thanks again.

The ones I bought are Thompson-Center "Mag Express". They are green sabots. I purchased them from Midway USA. They loaded just fine on a dry run, I just haven't had a chance to try them yet.

RPM issues?
your fine man,, it's a sabot.

if 2 wraps of .002 paper will get you to about 2800 fps easy enough, an 1/8" thick piece of plastic should do just fine.

my 50 cal muzzle loader has fired nothing but 44 cal sabots , as for my choice of bullet mostly j-words 240 to 260 gr. but what ever 44 cal bullet was handy in the reloading room. all have worked well I have not recovered a bullet from a deer they all went through the deer and kept going. So now days I see no reason to change except for the fact that there is plenty of cast boolits for 44 Mag. and 444 marlin setting around I may try one soon.

I am thinking the twist rate in a ML barrel for conical bullets is something like 1 in 26, round ball is about 1 in 48. Your rpm should be no problem.
