I have tried ropes and chains. I have found using rebar and a little wire to hold up well. I haven't had any problems since going to rebar a little over a year ago.

Rebar. Hmm. That's firmly in the "Well Duh,,," column.

Old fire hose bolted to the back holds up quite well too.

I use baler belt looped and bolted to holes cut in the target.

Straps made from tire sidewalls work very well and will take multiple strikes.

How far into the ground do you put the shepard hooks in?
Looks like a solution I'm looking for.
Will they stand up to a 175 grns doing 2000 fps?
Thnx

i got the 48" shepherd hooks from lowe's for $8 each. they have dual prong bottoms that are easy to foot into tough ground and hold quite well.

that video shot above shows a shootingtargets7 3/8" x 10" ar500 steel plate stuck out about 53 yards and hit with a patched .490" 175 grain pure lead ball pushed by 80 grains of swiss 1-1/2f black powder @ about 1800fps. i think both the steel and hooks can take a lot more pounding than that.

Just out of curiosity...how do you go about bending the rebar into that pretzel shape without sprouting a hemorrhoid?

Lead Collecting Steel Targets Part One (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CY0MOdEMSE) >>>?..."Why not try to keep that lead splatter and recycle?"

and...AbitNutz, you need use an acetylene torch and a jig for rebar, lightweight 1/4" cold rolled steel could be muscled but it won't be consistent from one hook to the next and I doubt it'll last too long with magnum pistol rounds, it'll prolly bend from impacts.

ya buy it prebent. shepherd's hooks are plant hangers, only $8 each. ;)

I used a vice and a 3 foot piece of black pipe. I bent, squeezed and checked the fit. I did not need any heat. It is much cheaper than chain and just might be eternal.

When I used to use steel targets in various locations in the Las Vegas desert, I hung them from a collapsible steel saw horse I bought at Home Depot. It never fell over or rocked the way the shepherd's hooks seem to. Plus, you could use the saw horse on rocky ground where it would be impossible to plunge the hook into the ground.

I have also built a number that don't hang/rely on driving anything into the ground.
