I just found an online ad about a guy selling some lead. The ad was 5 weeks old, but he still had the lead. He's asking about $360 for the lot. It is probably more than 1500 lbs. I'm seriously considering it.

Well, I purchased it.

Check hardness. They appear to be linotype pigs or at least lead that was poured into linotype pig molds.

bne I agree!! y'all got me jealous, by the way the star .459 sizing die works greati cant seem to get my 50 yard groups smaller then 5-6 inches w/ iron sights. I have tried harder, softer boolits, higher charges, do you think going to 460 might help, I have a marlin 1895 45-70, and I hear a lot of people with these size to 460. just wanted to know your opinion. thanks, Travis

You probably will never use that much but you can certainly re-sell it in smaller batches. If you have it tested and can post the composition and the hardness it will be much easier to sell.

That works out to .25 cents a pound. If that is Linotype it is a deal of a lifetime. Virgin Lino going for $3.00 a pound. Clean lead last checked at the scrap yard was .41 cents a pound. Great find.

Thanks to everyone for chiming in. A little update on the lead, it was a HAUL. 96 linotype pigs, I weighed one of them and it was 23lbs. The guy also threw in 17 15lb ingots, which was remelted linotype as well. This will last me a long time.

You definitely want to find out if it is Lino. Take it to a scrap yard and have them shoot it with the analyzer. If lino you could probably get 3 to 4 lbs. WW or range scrap alloy for it. Or sell it out right. Check old post for prices.

I checked the hardness, this stuff is hard. Right around 22BHN on my Cabine tree tester, so it sure looks to be linotype. The guy I bought it from got it from a local newspaper 30 years ago, which also supports it to be linotype.

I would still consider having it analyzed. That way you could post the percentages of metals. Needless to say that was a steal.

Another little haul, should be type metal but never saw it come in this form. Came in a wooden box, around 125 lbs. Anyone seen ingots like these before?

Might be tin to add to the linotype as it is reused... I would get those XRF checked for sure!

If really soft suspect might be plumbers lead, used in the past to seal pipes if harder, and a corner melts really easily with a propane torch I would suspect pewter or tin sweetener used to refresh linotype for re-use. If those are older, and still that shiny then plain soft plumbers lead is unlikely, that turns dark and even chalky with age. Shine and no tarnish takes alloy such as tin. Might also be Babbitt bearing metal but that is almost always labeled with the grade of Babbitt and in the picture I can't see any grade name.
