Like many others, I have a life long love affair/obsession with the 1911 pistol. Being an idle fellow, I was looking through Gunbroker and found a fellow with some really nice Colt stuff for sale. He bought a bunch of hard to find stuff from a retired Colt executive 25 years ago and he was getting ready for his own retirement and put it up for auction. I bit!
I bought a complete 70's Colt Gold Cup lower. Some more shopping brought me a minty same vintage Colt 22 Conversion unit. Back in the 60's I had a Colt Gold Cup and such a conversion unit. These conversions units work very well, provided you keep the two piece chamber clean.
I preformed a marriage ceremony on the two parts and had a very fine Colt full size 22 which was flawless reliable and whose accuracy is far better than I can shoot these days.
Still, things were not complete without a 45 ACP upper. The same fellow had a minty Colt 7990314 "hard slide" which I bought. I had all the rest of the needed parts in my Colt parts box. I fitted a Bar-Sto barrel, link and bushing and everything locks up as tight as a bank vault.
For those of you not familiar with this slide, these were replacement slides made after WWII and Korea for the government. Colt made them as well as several other makers. The 7990314 number on the slide is the drawing number. Mine was Colt made and except for the polish and finish was the same as they put on their post war 45 Government Models of the same period.
This parts 45 Auto is very accurate and reliable. It feeds all sorts of factory ammo and cast bullet reloads 100%. The small sights are a little slow to use, but still do the job just fine.
Long story short is I am a very happy man with the results.
