this might be a pistol cartridge ....maybe a rifle....maybe a wildcat shell

it's made by CBC
it's marked 44 W
it has a ever so slight bottleneck which is about 3/8" down from the case mouth.
you can put a 40 S&W shell case very loosely inside it.
it's the same exact length as a 45 colt.
the rim is ever so slightly bigger than 45 colt, as it won't go into any of my 44 mag shell holders or 45 colt shell holders.

being made by CBC i'm not one to think it's an obsolete round. so ...is it a wildcat cartridge?

Maybe a 38/44 Bain and Davis?
I believe it is 44 magnum Brass necked down to .357.

Never mind. A 40 S&W wouldn't fit in the case and you say it fits loosely.

.44-40 WCF is my guess also.

Being CBC, it's not gonna be a wildcat unless someone made one and left it, which would be unlikely. I think ravelode is correct. 44 WCF aka 44-40.

So it will not fit a 44 Mag holder or 45 Colt the 44-40 and the 38-40 use the same shell holder. The 44-40 rim is different from the other two. So my vote is 44-40 or possible 38-40.

CBC brass doesn't always fit the mold- I had a batch of 45 Colt and 30 carbine that wouldn't fit there respective shell holders - both were too small so I gave them to a girl to make jewelry out of

I agree - it's .44 W.C.F., aka .44-40 Winchester
