My Lyman manual doesn't have any data for a cast bullet that heavy. My old Speer #11 has data for jacketed with 296....180 gr TMJ 20.6 - 22.6, 200 gr TMJ 18.6 - 20.6.......start on the low side.

THrockmorton -

Howdy !

What gun will these loads be shot in ?

If it's an H & R SB2, you might not even closely approach the rifling w/ 158s; and powder charges might run a tad higher than what is listed @ reloading sites.

I use between 20 to 21 gr with 296/H110 with 180 gr jacketed in my 10'' contender. Have taken deer with this load with no problems.

Look here in the pistol section. Hodgdon has H110/W296 data for 170, 180 and 200 grain bullets. You can substitute cast, but do not reduce loads with these powders.

I was loading 19 grains of H110 with a 210 SWCGC. I shot this in my Dan Wesson, Contender, and H&R. It shoots okay but when you buy powder, IMR-4227 is the way you want to go.

4227 is the perfect powder for the .357 Max. ww296/H110 will work, but I haven't had great success with it. I shoot the Ranch Dog 190 gr. RNFPGC in my 17" barreled TC Encore pistol.

selmerfan is spot on. 4227 is the best powder I've found also. I too haven't had great luck with 296/110. It's "ok", just far from the best. Rel 7 is also a very, very good powder with this cartridge.

Shoot in the Max in a 10" TC I used to have, I used 20.1 with Lars45's old 185 grain GC boolit, but ONLY in cool weather.
Shooting in March 1 got 1618 fps and shooting from the same batch in August I got 1812 fps and sticky extraction.

It was accurate however.
