Beautiful morning for hunting today rain and snow mixed.

My wife wanted to hunt deer this year with her mothers rifle. Mom gave her the rifle several years ago when she quit hunting, she would have been 100 this year.

Savage 99 in 30-30 take down frame. My father-in-law bought it used in a local sporting goods store for $16.00 imagine what you would pay today.

The wife fired it yesterday for the first time ever, five rounds just to try the peep sight.

100 yard off hand shot, she hit him in the liver and paunch, something she has never done before. She was quite upset when we found him. He hadn't gone fifty yards before he laid down. Said she wouldn't have done that if she was shooting her Brno 7x57 but she was happy she got a deer with mom's rifle.178243

Tell SWMBO congrats on a nice Buck, I skinned and quartered this little 2x2 on Tuesday. I have a Disabled friend that has Prosthetics below the knees and a crippled up right hand from Muscular Dystrophy, that lives about 6 miles down the hill from the Cabin. He called me Monday afternoon and ask if I could skin a deer he had just shot near his place. I was in town at a Dr's appointment and was about an hour away. By the time I got to his place it was dark, he had field dressed it & got it hung up and wrapped in a Game Bag. The weather was really cool so decided to do it Tuesday morning. I spent the morning skinnin' & quarterin' while he supervised from a camp chair  Finished with ONLY 2 Meat Bee stings on my Left hand, I can think of a lot worse things to do on a Tuesday........... Nice buck, classic rifle and a woman that appreciates both. It doesn't get much better than that! Old 99 looks like it has a Lyman tang sight. Nice!

Wouldn't have guessed, but my Disabled Friend Jimbo killed another little Forked Horn yesterday, so I spent Friday afternoon showing my #3 Grandson ( 14 years old ) how to skin out a Buck. We went back this morning and Butchered after letting it hang overnight. The Kid did really good for his first exposure

Jimbo donated a front shoulder for helping him out. Life is good on the Mountain.

As Don Eades told me one time when discussing ML calibers and I lamented the barrel I was picking up was only 45 caliber . . .

I killed a buck(finally) last season with my Dad's 94 Winchester 30-30. He was as tickled as I was. It is a great feeling. Your better half is a good shot!
