I am thinking about trying some 4227 in my 357 mag pistols and 24" rifle. Why? Because a lot of people mention it when taking about loads. I have used just about evrything else.

Is it Hodgen's or IMR powder? or are they the same?

Anyone have some favorite loads for pistol or rifle?

Thanks,

Crabo

I don't know of anyone who uses it in .357 or .44 magnums. While it's burning speed is quite close to that of H110/WW296, it is bulkier and doesn't burn as well in cases like that as it does in .30-30 and .45-70 etc. Perhaps it needs more oxygen.

I never have used it in the 357, but have run it in 32-20,45 colt and 44 magnum.
It works pretty well in the rifles but I didn't care much for it in the handguns.
Grab a can of it and give it a try, you might just find a load you really like. heck the fun and adventure trying to get it to work is worth a good bit more than the price of a pound of powder.:drinks:

I use IMR-4227 in 357. For Marlin 1894, 24 inch barrel,with a Lee C-180 RF, I use 12 grains. With a Lyman #358156, I use 13 grains. The 358156 shoots really good in my S&W 19 too.

I also use IMR-4227 in 30 M-1 carbine, 44 Mag, and 30/30 cast loads.

H4227 (never used the IMR) is a PB cast friendly powder that is quite accurate and doesn't seem to burn too hot; it doesn't seem to burn throats nearly as badly as the hot ball powders. It's best suited for the heavier bullets, tho, and it is wasteful. (You use a lot of it compared to something like Herco, which I like better.)

I like IMR4227 with 180gr bullets in my 357 mag revolver.

I use the H 4227 ( I had it ) with 180 , 200 , 215 and 220 gr bullets in the 357 mag

A good crimp and it works fine

I use IMR-4227 in my .44 mag lever action rifle, and it works very well there. I don't use it in .357 mag--I much prefer either 2400 or 296. Based on its performance in my .44 mag rifle, I might use it in .357 if I had a little lever action in that caliber, I dunno.

I've never had any problems with accuracy using it in any caliber I've tried it in (.357 mag, .44 mag, .45 Colt +P), it's just that it always lags significantly in velocity compared to 296, H110 or Lil Gun. If I'm using 15+ grains, or in the case of the bigger calibers, 20+ grains of powder, then it's because I want a full power load. Of course, if I got a bunch of it for free it would certainly be a different story.
