I've decided to clean out the safe of rifles that don't get shot much. Before I list a firearm to sell it I like to shoot it and have some targets to post with the listing. So I got out my "target" 03A3 today and decided to shoot a few targets.

This rifle has always been a cracker jack of a shooter, but it's been nearly seven years since I shot it.

I haven't cast any .30 caliber in probably 5 years, but had a couple of small batches of 311672's, all cast from ACWW, laying around. When I'm piddling like this I always try to use the powder of which I have the most. Today AA#7 got the call. I've never tried it on a 30-06 but used it extensively in my 7.5x55 (14.0 grs.)and got some really good accuracy with it. So I decided to try that load. The first lot of bullets I used were checked with home made aluminum checks and lubed with Rooster Red Zambini lube. I discovered after shooting them they were sized .311".

I had a Redfield International receiver sight on it, but it wouldn't adjust low enough, so I dug through my junk and found enough parts to cobble together a Williams 5-D and mount it. It was a challenge to get it sighted in at 100 yds., but once I did I was pretty pleased with the group:

Dusk was approaching so I hurriedly made some elevation adjustments so I could fling a few at the 200 yd. target. This bunch of bullets were lubed with a softer red lube and sized .310". The first group was a little low and right, but it was a nice one measuring 5 shots in about 3 1/2". I made some adjustments to the sights and fired my last four rounds.

It never ceases to amaze me just how accurate 70+ year old rifles, built in wartime conditions can be!

Excellent shooting! With groups like those, I'm going to write down your load info and use it myself. Now, if I can just find a 03-A3 "cheap". Lol

Good luck with that. One just sold a day or two ago on this forum for 950 plus shipping. Wow!
