A lot of people recommend placing a felt wad between a conical bullet and a powder charge.
Where can I find such felt and how thick should it be?

I use 1/8" felt. Try here:

As for me and my house, for conical balls, we do note use wool felt wads under the boolit. Takes up too much chamber space and the lubricated grooves do the job anyways.

For round ball shooting, such is less messy than greasing over the chambers but requires prep work at home. Use hard wool, 1/8' thick from Durofelt. I cut mine to fit cookie sheets and then lubricate the whole sheet and punch them out as needed with custom punches made by Ohio Ramrod over at the Muzzleloading Forum.

The lubricant is a mixture of tallow and beeswax and on the stiffer side as to prevent melting and fouling the powder charge as opposed to lubricating them with bore butter.

The search feature will come up with links to Durofelt and many lubricant recipes to suit your needs.

My go to "wad" in rifles has long been cards gasket punched out of the spongy pressed paper that egg cartons are made of. Have used them dry and also saturated with melted black powder bullet loob (lanolin-olive oil-beeswax). Recently I made up a sample to try out with cotton batting pressed (during drying) down on the surface of the egg carton material over a thinned down brushed on coat of glue. The resulted card wad with an adhered batting layer to hold lube looks promising.

The idea is that seeing the better 2/3's is a quilter the batting scraps are abundantly available and well, why the heck not give it a try! Once the card wads are punched out I'm gonna dip the pieces in the heated loob.
Haven't tried lube wads in the .41 revolver yet. The 7/16" punch oughta work ok.

For C&Bs I use wool felt in 1/8" or 3/16". Otherwise I get Circle Fly's fiber 1/2" fiber wads and then lube & split them to desired thickness (1/8-1/4").

I have a black Baily's cowboy hat I cannot seem to sell for love or money. Think I found a use for it.
