Would a 50/50 mix of wheel weights and lead pipe make a good mix for a cast bullet (approx. 190 gr.) load for deer hunting using my .32-40? Or any other suggestions??

This will work very well on deer, just hit him in the right place.

If you can lightly scratch it with a fingernail, it will make an excellent white tail boolit.

This is one of the "standard" hunting alloys, 50/50 WW/Pure. I settled on 96/2/2 because I was buying foundry certified lead. Good expansion while not being brittle and not to hard.

Sounds perfect.

Best of luck to you.

I don't know about that 50/50 mix. I prefer a 50.76/49.24 mix myself.[smilie=s:

I would say whatever alloy shoots best out of your rifle. Internal ballistics are more important then external ballistics, in this case. There will be very little difference in the alloys (OK, there is a SLIGHT difference) at impact on a white tail size critter. A little harder alloy would be better for griz, and moose, and such. Of course i state that without the knowledge of your 32-40 performance levels (my knowledge on a 32-40 is slim... at best...to begin with).

That being said, feed your rifle what IT wants. My Henry shoots relatively soft lead well, but i dont push it too hard. Rough guess... 10 or 11 BH and about 1800 fps for a 45-70.

I used cast .30 caliber bullets for deer years ago. While they worked, I don't recall indications of any appreciable expansion. I think the bullets were likely too hard; probably around 15-16 BHN.

If I were to try it again, I would shoot the softest bullet at the highest velocity that gave decent accuracy and minimal or no leading. I'm not familiar with lead pipe, but it sounds soft and may be perfect with WWs.

Have killed many deer with 300 Savage, 30-30, 308, and 45-70 using 50/50 WW & PB with 2 % tin added.
