Howdy yall! I am wondering what mould options there are with the .54 Maxi designs. I have heard that T/C & Lyman both made moulds for it in the Maxi-Ball design but they seem next to impossible to find. Also, are the .54 Maxi-hunters around and did T/C only make those?

Also, does a .58 Maxi-Ball & Maxi-Hunter moulds even exist?

Thank yall so much!

used T/C & Lyman maxi moulds can sometimes be found on gunbroker & evil-bay & such places. Lee R.E.A.L. moulds are probably yer best bet these days & they do come in 58cal versions. they're about 19 bucks each at Midsouth.

Well, I guess ill politely ask to keep this discussion about finding Maxi moulds. Though I wonder, do the .58 variant moulds exist? Ill keep the REAL in mind and probably pick one up.

If you were motivated enough ($$$!) you could have one made. As a stop-gap measure look at Hornady's 'Great Plains Bullet'. Store bought, I know. But they work. I used one on a Colorado Mule Deer. DRT.

don't know if maxi-ball or maxi-hunter moulds were ever offered in 58 caliber but, Midsouth Shooters Supply has double cavity 58cal R.E.A.L. moulds for $18.94 and shows them to be in stock.

What gun and barrel twist are you going to shoot these in and are they to be used for hunting? Maxies don't shoot well in all guns and RBs do allot better than some think. I'm not push for you to go with RBs just saying they are an option. That said, I second on the Lee REALs and Lee does make some pretty decent minies also. I have a 58 Cabela's Hawken that shoots the Lee .58 (copy of an original minie) pretty well. It weighs in at about 510gr. Nothing for target shooting but it shoots minute of deer at 100y well enough. My 54 shoots the REALs well but I haven't tried them at 100y yet. The REALs come in two sizes per caliber. A lighter one and a heavier one.

While your waiting on a Maxi Hunter, you could try the Lyman 54 Great Plains 450gn mould #548657. I have been testing it out in my Renegade, best 5 shot group has been 3.5 in at 100, worst 5.5 in. Before anyone speaks up, yes I read how several folks on this forum did not like the mould. But I wanted to try it out anyway.

Oh this is fun! Do let us know how this goes. I have so many options for smoke pole deer hunting, gun and projectile wise, but no deer to shoot! California has gotten to be slim pickens on public land. I'm hoping to see a photo here later with the juicy details. Good luck!

Well, I can't advise much but can relate experience.
I saw my brother shoot a cotton tail on the run with a .54 maxi. The right hind leg was kinda sticking out of the left shoulder. Reckon that's more a testament to his ability than comment on the load. But he shot low and missed the head shot. Our rules back then was head shots only. Otherwise there wasn't nothing to eat.

I have the TC maxi , maxi hunter and Lyman. They all shot great out of my Hawken and Renegade, with 105 grs of 2ffg. I used a fiber wad underneath, lubed in veggie oil. The Renegade with a scope, and the stock glass bedded, would shot 3 shots touching at 100yds. I have taken 43 deer with these 3 bullets, and some HOrnady Great Plains slugs, in 50 and .54, I could not ask for anything better. Recoil can be a issue.

Do any of the mould makers have a copy of a maxi ball or maxi hunter? I am looking for a good conical for a 1-48" twist 50cal. I really like something with more meplat than the lee real.

They do exist, I have twelve boxes of them that will be posted for sale. Eleven boxes still sealed and one opened but complete. I can only assume that the sight of them scared the owner, Lol.

I have never shot a round ball, i have melted MANY of them down and made bullets from them tho! I am in the bullet camp! Paper patched and sized that is. The Aerodynamics of a round ball is very unintriguing to me.

I do not ever remember seeing 58 cal. T/C molds ever being available for sale like the 50 and 54 molds were. If you wanted something like it, look at accurate molds.

I just sold several TC .50 and .54 maxi hunter molds. Here is my reason. The aluminum molds, even when take care of, are not as durable as steel. The semi hollow point has very little effect on game over a rounded/flat meplat nose, which pushes tissue away. The Lyman molds shoot as good as any maxi out there, even better with a wad underneath them. I just ordered a .50 and.54 Lymans Plains Maxi mold Monday, got them yesterday, new, in stock at Midsouth Shooters, $61.60 each! Cast them out of soft lead, put enough powder to get them to fill the bore, and go kill stuff. Easy to cast, steel molds that will last the rest of my life, no nose pin to fill with. I have killed bunch of deer, at last count over 50 from my hunting journals, with 6 different maxi ball types, no issues with any when well placed, period. Get someone on here to make you a ,58 mold, if you must, but I would obtain and shoot a few with hunting loads first, to see if you can stand the recoil. The .54 and 105 grains of 2ffg is a tack driver for me in my 1-48 twist rifles, but about all the recoil I can stand.
