Afternoon All,
Long time lurker, first time poster.

Trying to figure out the mold / sizer size for a hollow base pure lead slug to be used in the 3 Gun game.
Velocity will probably be in the 1200 ish range. Thinking a brush type wad with a full bore slug. Have the mold made oversize, inorder to size and coat after casting but this is where it gets a little fuzzy.

18.5" barrel measures .735" and the game is primarily shot with a .010" or .020" choke. Would you size the slug to say barrel minus .001" or to the choke size ?

Thank You for the help,
Steve

Search for "Lee Key Drive Slug" it is used with the plastic wad. there are tips for getting good accuracy with it.

I load slugs for my son to use in 3-gun shoots. His shotgun and most of the ones I have looked at are cylinder choke smoothbores. I found a .69 caliber round ball in a standard trap wad is more than accurate enough for his 3-gun shooting.

I use the Lyman Sabot. An Trap wad at about 1150 or less (Unless Power Factor is in play)
Cly,IC, Chock, less recoil, Faster shooting.....

Winchester and Federal wad petals measure .025", at least mine do. Double that and subtract it from your choke dimension. Up to .003" more then choke dimension gives best accuracy. The wad keeps you from having lube and keeps the weight down for reduced recoil. Most everybody in my area shoots a modified choke in 3 gun.

And welcome to the site.

Bikerbeans, has the correct and easy answer! The M500 "riot guns" are all open bore of .735. And the round ball loads are the easiest to do and as accurate as anything else that comes out of a smoothbore shotgun.

If you load Winchester AA hulls with a common Trap Load of say 15 gr of Red Dot or 20 gr of Green Dot,(consult a manual for exact loads) using a Winchester 12AA Wad or Claybuster equivalent, then place a 1/4" thick felt wad under a .662 Round Ball instead of shot, you will have exactly what you are looking for.

The biggest problem people run into when loading shotshells is getting the crimp to close right. This load is the correct height to do that. I also recommend that if you don't have a 12ga shotshell loader that you get one. MEC, Pacific etc. If you are only going to load shotshells for 3 gun a MEC 600 or a Lee Loadall will do the trick and used ones are all over Ebay for $50.

This load recoils the same as a normal trap load, which you should be able to shoot 200 of in one afternoon. It is accurate from a M500, or at least my M500, out to 50 + yards and is easy to make.

Here's pics.

Thank You all for the replies.

So the math for a wadded slug is choke + .003" to .007". Is it the same for a full bore pure lead slug ?
