I make up paper cartridges for it. So far I've shot it with 50 grains of fffg and it does really well.

I've had a lot of 'em over the years that I've really liked . . . but based on what I have now . . . if I had to choose one . . . it would by my H & A .36 under hammer - it was one that Deer Creek made years ago. A fun plinker . .. easy on powder and lead and since I can't shoot right handed anymore, it was an easy switch to shoot it left handed. Simple yet loads of fun.

1860. Definitely. I do love my Walker, but I carry my '60 everywhere. They're just a hoot to shoot.

I only have a these and a .50 cal Lyman sidelock, but my ROA is certainly my favorite.

I must admit that a Walker is on my list too, however a bit lower, as I like the history behind it as well as the massiveness and power.

An old CVA Mountain 50 cal . Bought it in a hock shop for next to nothing , was a kit rifle and whoever put it together made a mess of it . Ugly blonde/yellow stock , no fitting done , scratched up with a trashy blue job .

Reason I liked it was that it was so ugly I didn't even carry it in a case , it just layed in the car trunk . In the process of always having it with me I shot it more than 'better' rifles I owned . I could use it more proficiently because of repeated use . Pretty much wore it out and gave it to a guy for his grandson to learn to shoot black powder .

I have quite a few and like the different ones for different reasons so it's really hard to pick a favorite. If I had to get rid of all but one though, I'd keep an old 32 cal original ML. It's just a plain style like a hardware store gun. Weights a ton though. 39" barrel 1 1/8" across the flats. So long I have a hard time fitting it in my car.

currently, that'd be a GPR slow twist .50 that i stuck together from a kit and added SML aperture front and rear sights.

i prefer flintocks only, and the convenience of a hooked tang breech half stock = the hawken "missing transition" rifle that marries those two features that have never been found on one hawken rifle.

Beautiful Ithaca Gunner! That looks like it would hit whatever it's pointed at!

I shot it a few seasons of N-SSA competition and it's a three way tie for accuracy between my 1856 Windsor Enfield and my 1862 Colt Special model. One I've always wanted to own and shoot is the 1864 Springfield, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

No other rifle shoulders as well as this early style Pa. rifle. Throw it up to the shoulder pointed in the direction of your target and it sort of follows your mental image of the target. Stock, swamped barrel?..all I know is it fits and balances perfectly for me.

But in the shotgun category it has to be the original William Landell double barrel I picked up this spring.

I only have two original Cap & Ball Revolvers...and a few reproduction C & B Revolvers..no Muzzle Loading Long Arms yet.

Of these my circa 1864 Remington .44 is my favorite...it is just magical somehow, so well made, never over buffed like the repros, crisp, original finish, fine mechanism, just a joy to shoot and admire all round.

Well, I only have one and a half BP guns to pick from... Don't worry, I'll add more.
What I have is a TC Hawken in 50... sweet shooting rifle. Then, this summer I saw and snagged a 12ga shotgun barrel for her. Dramatically changes the gun, and yes, its a joy to shoot! So, that's my favorite BP gun right now.

I'm saving pennies for an under hammer next. Not sure if I want the H&A 36 or 45 cal... Guess I better get both then!

Ruger Old Army for sure. I even wish I had another one, in Stainless.

But you might be surprised what my 2nd favorite is: A CVA Electra.

They are orphans now, but it gives me great satisfaction to have the ability to bypass the commercial ammo & reloading supply chain, 100.000 % of the time. I brew my own BP, cast my own lead, and once in a while have to go to JoAnn's Fabrics for patch material. Oh and 9-volt batteries instead of percussion caps.

Oh I know, If it breaks, I've got a problem. But it has been rock solid so far. It's hard to explain how satisfying it is (TO ME, anyways) to be independent of the gun shops should a SHTF scenario ever arise. (Or even a bad outcome in November, if you get my drift.)

When the question comes up "what is your favorite ______" fill in the blank, my mind starts racing, I start shaking and break out in a cold sweat. I understand the concept of "favorite" but, evidently I am too fickle to have one. Usually my favorite is the one I have in hand at the moment. So here, you guys pick.....I can't. Rifles and 20 bore fowler from the top: 36 cal. Southern Mountain, 54 cal. Gary White Jaeger, 54 cal. Gun Works Hawken, 20 bore fowler and 45 cal. semi-custom.

Pistols and revolvers from top left: 45 cal. custom pistol, 62 cal Matt Avance smooth bore, 54 cal. Lyman Great Plains Pistol I did from a kit. Top right, Hawes 1860 Army and Navy Arms, 1851 Navy.

Thanks Whizzer. They're ALL my favorite....lol I can't pick favorites of anything. If I'm handling a nice muzzleloader that belongs to a friend it's my "favorite" at the moment. I love bamboo fly rods and have a few....decent vintage rods but none are anything to write home about, lower tier blue collar rods, and I'm just as fickle with them.

Buckshot, yes a safety that locks at half cock the tumbler also has a fly detent. My bullet is Hollow based and Hollow pointed with a wooden plug to stop slumping at the nose.Doing a bit of research and having help from interested folks I modified a Lyman Mould to cast both hollows and also to cast the bullet longer. It turned out quite near to Whitworths bullet and although it has canelures it will take a paper patch.in both cases it has to be swaged to size.Your two Parker Hale rifles are very close to the originals and probably shoot better.

Reverend Al

You don't happen to have any photos of the inside of the lock and the sliding safety mechanism from your Whitworth Match rifle by chance? I have an Alfred Clayton double rifle built on the Jacobs pattern (.52 calibre with 4 rifling bands cast as part of the bullet) and the sliding safeties from both locks are missing. I suspect that they might have been removed deliberately since this rifle saw extensive use hunting in Africa. I think the owner didn't want the safeties sliding "on" in a bad situation with dangerous game animals, but that is just my best guess. I'm hoping to find some photos or schematics to use as a guide to fabricating the missing pieces for my rifle.

It has an interesting history and according to the old Latin inscription on the patchbox cover it was presented to a "Lt. E Rogers" by "the grateful men of his African Legion" in 1858. From my research I found that there was a matching "Lt. Eberneezer Rogers" was with the 3rd East Indian Regiment who received his commission in mid 1858 and served for many years in East Africa. He drafted several military related articles for magazines of the day and wrote several books on tactics and about his life in military service after he retired to Ireland. He was a huge fan of Dr. Richard J. Gatlings fast firing guns and actually named two of his later residences after them. ("Gatling Lodge" and "Gatling House") If only these guns could talk and tell us their stories!

I'm in absolutely no rush as this has been a long term project. I can wait until you get the camera back and have time to shoot some photos. I'm looking into having a custom mold cut for it so that I can finally get it out shooting.

Reverend Al,If you will bear with me I will take some Photos of the Lock internals so that you can restore that very nice Jacobs Rifle.A slight delay my daughter has my Camera.
Regards.

The modified Lyman Mould to produce side poured Bullets in order to cast both hollows.I must confess it had me scratching my head on how to do it.I suspect the originals where swaged rather than cast.http://i1052.photobucket.com/albums/s452/livebattery/sidepourmouldforlargewhitworthRifle001.jpg (http://s1052.photobucket.com/user/livebattery/media/sidepourmouldforlargewhitworthRifle001.jpg.html)

The Detent (Fly) can be seen but the safety internals are hidden .I will delve further.
This Photo is off my Photobucket library from a previous enquiry regarding the Whitworth Lock.

Sorry I can't post pics but my favorite is my .69 caliber rifle built on an original Peter Allen action with an 1 1/8 octagon barrel and curly maple with a shotgun butt. Easy to shoot and everything goes down when hit with it.

This is one I made some years ago after reading my copy of Ned Roberts Book "The Muzzle Loading Cap Lock Rifle".It is based loosely on those target rifles of that era.It does not bear close inspection especialy the engraving at the Breach but it shoots good.50 Calibre one turn in Twenty six inches Rifling.I rifled this one using a twisted bar.

The Lock is an old Back action Shotgun one,I made the Hammer.

This unusual design of single set trigger might be of interest. The trigger is pushed forwards and the spring roller just goes over the Bump in the Trigger Blade when firing,it can be adjusted to feather touch if required. It was necessary to modify the Lock Tumbler to take a detent and also to cut a half cock notch.
