La. Wildlife and Fisheries Dept. has proposed for the period of 2008-2010
hunting seasons ,a"Primitive Weapons" season .This would take the place of what it is now called Muzzleloader Season.the new season would include the use of single shot breech loading rifles of a kind or type built and used before 1900,38 cal. or larger, reproductions or reintroductions of that type of rifle ,with an exposed hammer. this rifle of a type that uses a metallic cartridge loaded with either blackpowder or smokeless powder.(factory or reloads) Muzzleloader regs. remain the same.

AFAIC as long as the regs prohibit Optics during "primitive" season, there is no practical difference between a .50 ML throwing a minnie/maxi and a .45-70 trapdoor...

I searched the LDWF site at http://www.wlf.state.la.us/ and found no mention of the above.

I've heard the rumor for a couple of years. Heck, I've hunted with my single shot 45-70 on purpose.

Hawaii has been looking at this also, but from the stand point of there is so much hype about muzzleloaders having better than 30-30 ballistics that they are thinking now just a single shot rifle...

I have no problem with any of the black powder cartridge guns with or without optics.

Aloha... :drinks:

I got an email this morning from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries. The "crossbow/45-70 bill," they call it, is on the governor's desk awaiting his signature. This is outstanding, IMHO.

The way I read the proposal, my 44 mag Handi-Rifle is also legal--it's "38 caliber or larger."

... the use of single shot breech loading rifles of a kind or type built and used before 1900...

Don't have a dog in this "fight", but wouldn't the above rule out the Handi rifle. An old Harrington and Richards would be ok, but the Handi is NOT a reproduction of one of those.

A Handi-Rifle easily fits the "kind or type" requirement.
