Please excuse my ignorance but should I assume that the 357 MAXIMUM typically uses large primers?

I don't think so all my brass has small primer pockets.

it generally uses small pistol magnums, this appears to use small rifle.

Primer pockets for small pistol and small rifle are the same. The decision to use standard or magnum depends on the powder choice. The decision to use small rifle primers is based on the expected operating pressure and the ability of the firearm to reliable ignite the harder primers.

This stuff has been around for quite sometime and if it's like the rest of their brass it's some high quality stuff.http://www.captechintl.com/proddetail.php?prod=357MAX100pcs
