300-340gr 4570 loads

I mixed up some lymans#2 for my mosin nagant and got to thinking about high vel. loads for the marlin 22"bbl 1895 using 300-340grain boolits. I use imr4198, which I think wil be fine for this project. does anyone have any tips, loads advice, or experience? I am probably going to have to put a scope on it(don't wanna, its my eyesight) so I figured why not stretch my range capability? by that I mean a MAX of 150 yards. I like the lee 340gr but I think it pours to small, like 457? but I will look around. I wish lyman made their 330 hp without an hp, or could I make a short rod to fit in the mold to plug it and make it a solid? I dunno, any help is welcomed and appreciated. thanks a lot, Travis

Try 48 grains of either H4198 or IMR4198 behind some Hornady 300 grain HP and prepare to be amazed with the accuracy. My GBL dotes on it. I know you are talking lead boolits. I found the 340 grain Lee under size all well so I patched it with some teflon tape.
The patched boolits gave me a group of 2" at 50 yards. Two wraps brought it up to .460.

Bill mentioned using Teflon tape to wrap bullets to bring up diameter. I've also did powder coating to bring diameter up to .461" for better accuracy.

With a 45-70 "high velocity" loads aren't all that high, especially if you don't plan to shoot beyond 150 yards. You can get all the speed you need and not have to worry about leading if you size your boolit properly.
Why do you "think it pours small"? Have you measured the boolits and have you slugged your bore?

RCBS mould 45-300 casts at 325 grain including gas check, using clip on wheel weights. .458 diameter if you get the casting method right. I think Rcbs does a similar mould in plain base. Add 1lb of Lino to 10lbs of clip on puts my bullets at .4585 dia.

I am going to get the mold anyways and hope it throws a .459 +, and yeah 1700 isn't THAT high of velocity, but for a 45-70 and all of my previous loads, it is fast for me.

If it does make small boolits it might be just a matter of changing your alloy or lap it out to size and that's easy to do. Buy it and shoot it, see what happens.

I have the RCBS 45-325 (plain base) mould. It too casts heavier then advertised. 335 gr to 339 gr. It was spitting them out at .4575.
But preheating the mould a little more spit them at .4585....and a little heavier, more consistent weight....342 gr. And that is using the same alloy. I know a thousandth sounds like a lot, but the lube grooves seem to be a sharper, fuller cast.

You could always grind or file the hollowpoint pin to fit flush with the nose.

It also occurs to me that some experimenting with alloy might give you a nice harder boolit for increased velocity while minimizing hollowpoint expansion and meat damage. And don't harder alloys cast to a larger diameter? That lyman design has been a proven performer for a long time.

CBE in Australia can make you a version of the Lyman's Gould design with a solid nose and can also add a GC shank. I had them do one for me that was a heavier weight and had various HP & solid pins. It was about 400gr and is very accurate and effective.

RCBS 45-300rngc drops at 325gr and around .458 with WW material. I use 5744 exclusively with those boolits and 33 gr drives them at 1550 fps from my Marlin 1895 CB with a 26" bbl.

Sighted 1" high a 100 it is dead on at 150 and 6" low at 200. This is exactly what you are looking for.

If you don't have the mold yet I'd suggest the NOE version of Ranch Dog's 350gr boolit. We've shot them through five different Marlin Guide Guns, one Marlin 1895 and a Pedersoli High Wall with great success.

dont count out Tom at "accurate" molds. he has great molds and makes em outta steel, brass, and aluminum. his molds are super in quality and you can order his molds at the diameter you want. i have a drawer full of his molds and will use em forever.

IMR 3031 is another powder to use to get up there as well as RL-7. that IMR 4198 is a good one tho.
