2000fps with a 405gr boolit? You must be really mad at something- something big!

As the guys here know, I'm certainly not an experienced caster, but I've been reloading for over 28 years. I haven't worked with cast and H4198 yet. RD shows 50gr of H4198 and his 350GC at 2100fps and 40.5k PSI. Increasing the boolit weight by 16% would certainly increase pressure. How much???? Enough that I would start a lot lower and work up.

Here are the cast loads I'm currently shooting out of my 1895M:

Lee 405gr RNFP 20gr of 2400 1200fps 1" - 5 shot groups at 100 yds.

RanchDog 350GC over 49gr of H322 1725fps

RanchDog 425GC over 46gr of H322 1650fps

The RD boolits are all shooting well- 1" or so at 50yds. I haven't shot them any further (yet) and I'm still playing with the loads to find the best one for each boolit.

All use a CCI 200 and are sized to .460". On the Lee, the sizer just wipes the extra lube off. I dip in straight Xlox, size, and tumble lube the RD boolits after sizing in thinned LLA. All of these loads are comfortable to shoot- especially the Lee. It's my "plinker" load and is very low cost- about 15 cents each. (Not counting the brass, which should last forever at these pressures. After every three or four loadings, I'll probably anneal the case necks. The cases don't even grow! They may never need trimming!)

I started casting to feed my 1895M and my .480 SRH. The Marlin has been a resounding success. The SRH is still giving me a few fits. Prior to finding the silver stream, my hunting load for the Marlin was a RP 300gr JHP with 62gr of RL7 at about 2300fps. It is not a comfortable load to shoot and probably a lot more than is needed for deer. It does knock them DRT, however. I'm contemplating the RD350 for next season. [smilie=1:

Those RD425s are quite the flying hammerhead. I would think they would adjust the attitude of just about anything you might throw them at on this continent.

The 1895M is an awesome rifle! Some folks used to say, "If you reload- get a 45-70, if you don't get a .450 Marlin." I bought the .450 because I reload. If they ever stopped making it, all I need is brass. And I'm also expecting that over time, loads will be developed that will take advantage of the stronger case. If not- it's still a force to be reckoned with! :Fire:

Enjoy!

04Jeep,
Use to have a 458 x2" years ago. I believe the case capacity is the same. Load I used was 49 gr 4198 w/win primer and a 415 gr cast. Never chronographed as I didn't have one then but I believe that load gave me about 1900-1950 fps. Took the data from PO Ackley Handbook. Accuracy was 1.5-2.00 in @ 100. Took 2 moose in Canada.

Best Accuracy load was 400 gr Speer j-word over 49 gr 4198.
