I've seen a couple references to pre drilling die blanks. Are you using cadd drawings to determine the depth, or is that an experience thing?

That was supposed to be Pre in the title, not Free.

Is that pre drilled die blanks?
If so, midway has them for about 25 bucks.
7/8X 14 outside and choice of many bullet diameters inside.
They come annealed, so you can cut them, then heat treat.

Yes,that's pre drilling point forming dies for "D" spoons or reams.

So the hole goes all the way through those dies.

Are you planning to use a bullet diameter punch for point forming?

I have given some thought to making a lead point tipping die that way, my thought is the tipping will happen pretty low in the die, then the punch can be brought out of the die with the eject system.
The operator may have to grab the bullet and wiggle it free of the punch.

JB Holes go all the way through piloted dies. Good for making lswc style bullet, core swage, or core seat die. Point form would need un piloted and drill and ream as necessary. Or buy piloted the same size as ejection punch. As for die depth. I would think that is determined by bullet length. Bullet must be all the way into the die before pressure is applied. D

This is what I was asking for. Thanks Cane_man for the detail. Thanks to all who responded, forgive me for such a confusing question. I'll do better next time.http://i913.photobucket.com/albums/ac331/johnelway/PointingDieStepDrillLayout_zps02ca0821.jpg
